The NAFA Philadelphia Chapter's Auto Show meeting nearly wasn't. Following a record snow storm on February 13 and one day postponement, members still came out to hear manufacturers present their new vehicle models and features, and to get a glimpse of the vehicles at the 2014 Philadelphia Auto Show on Valentine’s Day.

On February 27, NAFA's South Central Chapter held their meeting in Fort Worth, TX with about 40 attendees. The speaker for the day was Tim Sowards, Business Development/Fleet Remarketing at Flexco Fleet Services.

The Calgary Stampede was the host of the 2014 Calgary International Auto and Truck Show. NAFA's Western Canada Chapter was there to take it in on March 12, and brought back pictures to prove it!

The calendar read April 1, but on that Tuesday morning NAFA proved their commitment to the benefits of alternative fuels. Top leaders from the Association conducted a congressional briefing on alternative fuels and federal fuel policies in the Capitol Visitor Center Auditorium in Washington, DC.

According to the fifteenth annual Global Automotive Executive Survey, plug-in hybrids are poised to come out on top among e-vehicles, to produce cleaner, more efficient vehicles. The Global Automotive Executive Survey is an initiative of KPMG International, and highlights an annual assessment of the current state and future prospects of the automotive industry worldwide.

The torrent of General Motors’ recalls continued on March 31 when the company announced it was recalling 1.3 million cars because they may experience a sudden loss of electric power steering.

Hertz will separate into two publicly traded companies, with Hertz comprising car rentals and the Donlen fleet leasing business, and the other containing equipment rental operations. Hertz will get cash proceeds of about $2.5 billion from the spinoff to pay down debt and support a new $1 billion share buyback. The spun-off company will be called Hertz Equipment Rental Corp., or HERC.

The specially designed vehicle was originally expected to target a variety of different clients, including both the limousine and taxicab fleets, as well as the market for specialized vehicles for the disabled. AM General plans to focus on the all those markets going forward. "Definitely one of the markets we’re looking at," explains Spokesman Jeff Adams, "the livery and fleet markets. This is a perfect vehicle considering it’s universally accessible."

The agreement announced on March 13 between BP and the Environmental Protection Agency lifts the 2012 ban on BP doing new business with the United States government. The ban was imposed as a response to BP’s role in the 2010 well blowout that killed 11 rig workers, spilled millions of gallons of oil, and contaminated hundreds of miles of coastline.

It is with deep sadness that NAFA informs members of the passing of Russ Evans, Vice-President of Hertrich Fleet Services. Russ passed away on March 19, 2014 after a long battle with cancer.

A Member since 1979, Mike G. Moneymaker, Director of Transportation Services for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, passed away on Saturday, March 22. He was 66. Mike was a Club NAFA member as well as a Member of the Atlanta Chapter. Mike had developed a very rare form of lung disease, which required him to have a lung transplant. Mike unfortunately never received this transplant, but he did donate after his death in hope of helping someone else live a better life.

Congratulations go to NAFA member Debbie Struna, formerly Rite Aid's Fleet Manager, who has been hired by Volkswagen of America as its Pacific Region Fleet Account Manager. Struna managed a corporate fleet of about 1,700 vehicles for Rite Aid, and Volkswagen represented a portion of that. Struna reports to Martin Kiel, and began in this new capacity on March 24.

NAFA Affiliate Mike Zalas has been hired by LeasePlan USA to be Vice President Sales National Accounts in the fleet management company's north central region. Zalas currently is Program Committee Chair for NAFA's Chicago Chapter.

GM announced on March 14 that John Schwegman was named Director of Commercial Product; a change that would take effect April 1. Schwegman replaces Joyce Mattman, who has been appointed Global Director of GM Customer Experience Improvement and Integration.

Los Angeles Police Department has recently added a new toy to its fleet, a Lamborghini Gallardo, which will be used to fight crime around the city.
