On June 11, the Chicago Chapter welcomed 35 fleet managers, suppliers, and guests to the Embassy Suites in Schaumburg, IL for the Chicago Chapter Spring Double-header. A Green Municipal Fund (GMF) grant for the City of Surrey has been jointly announced by the Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). Announced on June 20, 2014, an investment of $75,400 will be put towards the replacement of a fleet of light-duty gasoline vehicles with four electric vehicles (EVs).

For the second time in less than a year, the Ford Motor Company is lowering the fuel-economy ratings for some of its vehicles. The automaker said in mid-June that it would reduce the mileage rating on six new models, most of them hybrids, and pay $125 to $1,050 to customers who own or lease about 200,000 of the cars in the United States.

Hours after the compensation details were announced, General Motors revealed it will stage another six separate recalls covering 7.6 million vehicles sold in the U.S. That move not only brings to nearly 26 million the number of GM vehicles recalled since just the beginning of the year, but also brings to nearly 39 million the overall tally of vehicles recalled by all automakers operating in the U.S. this year, exceeding the previous annual record by almost 15 percent – and in just six months.

With Toyota not only expanding a recall due to defective airbags but also bringing back some vehicles it had previously repaired, U.S. safety regulators have launched an investigation into the airbags produced by Japanese supplier Takata – a move that could impact not only Toyota but a number of other major manufacturers.

A new report from the USPS Inspector General said the United States Postal Service doesn’t have the financial resources to fully replace its aging vehicle fleet with newer, more IT-enabled and greener vehicles. The fleet of almost 212,000 vehicles is one of the largest vehicle fleets in the country, of which 75 percent — or almost 160,000 — are long-life vehicles with a projected life of approximately 24 years.
