The August 6 NAFA Tri-State Chapter meeting focused on opportunities for fleets to deploy cleaner fuels and efficiency technologies to improve vehicle performance. With such an important topic, there was no question that the turnout would be strong. Forty-one chapter members were in attendance, ready to hear learn the possibilities available to fleets in regard to sustainability.

The City of Toronto will soon have an additional fleet of streetcars from which commuters will be able to benefit from starting August 31. This project was carried out through the investments from the federal, provincial, and municipal governments in order to replace the old fleet of streetcars.

Wholesale used vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally adjusted basis) declined one percent in July. That resulted in a Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index reading of 122.7 for the month, an increase of 1.5 percent from a year ago. This was the third consecutive monthly decline in wholesale pricing. And, given that the magnitude of the decline has increased each month, it has prompted talk of a free fall in pricing. That talk is premature.

After recalling 889,000 Sonatas in late-July, Hyundai added another 420,000 vehicles to its recall list (including the Sonata again) for brake, electrical, and rust issues. The South Korean maker is also taking back 225,000 Santa Fe crossovers in twenty cold weather states. The 2001 to 2006 model year vehicles may have rusted coil springs that could fracture and puncture a tire. The springs impacted are in states that use salt on their roads in the winter.

Nearly seven in ten Americans have driven while drowsy, while millions have engaged in other risky behavior when they likely shouldn’t get behind the wheel, according to a new survey. Motorists also routinely drive vehicles that should either be parked or taken to a repair shop. More than six in ten have gotten behind the wheel when there’s a "check engine" light on, while nearly a third have headed out on a winter morning when they couldn’t see through snowy or icy windshields.

J.D. Power’s annual Initial Quality Study of vehicle models sold in the United States identified voice activation as the most common type of malfunction. Twenty-three percent of problems reported were related to audio, communication, entertainment, or navigation.

Time Warner Cable (TWC) has announced that it is joining a partnership administered by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to further reduce petroleum use and increase efficiencies within its fleet of more than 20,000 service trucks and vehicles. TWC’s participation in the DOE’s Clean Cities’ National Clean Fleet Partnership is part of the company’s "Go Green" initiative and overall commitment to corporate responsibility, under which TWC is on track to meet or exceed a fifteen percent reduction in 2012 total carbon intensity by the end of 2014.

Global logistics company UPS has released its twelfth annual Sustainability Report announcing that in addition to reducing overall carbon emissions in 2013, the company also met its 2016 goal of reducing its air and ground fleet’s carbon intensity by ten percent three years early. The company is a major user of natural gas vehicles (NGV).

Linde North America has announced it will build two publicly-accessible hydrogen stations in Northern California, courtesy of a $4.3 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC). One of the stations will be at Oakland International Airport while the other will be about 20 miles east in San Ramon, next to Toyota's regional office and parts distribution center for the San Francisco Bay Area.
