NAFA has been informed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that the agency lacks data on the safety performance of managed fleets with single-unit trucks. FMCSA has stated they would welcome input from NAFA's membership. We have developed a "beta" survey to see if NAFA members can provide the type of information FMCSA would need to make informed decisions about managed versus unmanaged fleets. We welcome your participation!

Gibbens' retirement from the Fleet of Henrico County was commemorated with a retrospective of twenty years of change within the fleet industry. Gibbens was NAFA's 29th President during 2005-2007, and was one of the founding members of the Old Dominion Chapter.

The NAFA Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York-InterCounty Chapters held their first annual tri-state Chapter Meeting on Monday, August 11 at Citizens Bank Park. The meeting was a great success with 135 attendees on a beautiful, sunny day. The event was sponsored by 28 vendors and their tremendous support was truly appreciated.

On August 20, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) unveiled its new online search tool that allows the public to easily discover if they’re vehicle needs to take a trip to the dealer. Those wanting to know can simply go to www.safercar.gov/vinlookup and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). All major light vehicle and motorcycle brands can be searched.

PHH Arval announced in mid-August that it will fully transition to the Element Fleet Management brand before the close of 2014. In a deal in early-July, Canadian finance company Element Financial Corporation purchased PHH's FMC wing. Element Financial Corp. was founded in 2007.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal ruled that a class of 2,300 individuals working for FedEx Ground was misclassified as independent contractors instead of employees. As a result, FedEx may owe its workforce of drivers hundreds of millions of dollars.

Former U.S. Attorney David Kelley has been appointed as the government monitor who will supervise Toyota Motor Corp.’s safety. Kelley will review Toyota’s policies, safety procedures, and verify the accuracy of its public statements. The monitor position is part of a settlement in March, whereby Toyota paid a record $1.2 billion penalty and admitted it misled U.S. consumers in 2009 and 2010 about problems with its cars over unintended acceleration.

Chrysler Group tapped its head of purchasing to lead a new office that will oversee safety issues and regulatory compliance as scrutiny over the industry’s safety record grows. In the new role, Scott Kunselman will report directly to CEO Sergio Marchionne, Chrysler said in mid-August. Tom Finelli, 44, Chrysler’s current director for global standardization, will assume responsibility for North American purchasing and supplier quality, effective immediately.

The Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) announced on August 20 the adoption of a new brand identity for the fuel, including a new logo and tagline: PROPANE Clean American Energy™. The new brand will replace PROPANE Exceptional Energy ® branding.

With new stations being built and more fleets converting, sales of natural gas as a vehicle fuel more than doubled expectations in Texas, Railroad Commissioner David Porter said. Texas is the third-biggest consumer of natural gas as a vehicle fuel behind California and New York, according to the Energy Information Administration.

On August 22, fleet management company GE Capital Fleet Services announced an agreement with VNG.co, a national CNG fueling facility provider, to support the expansion of the CNG refueling infrastructure for light-duty fleet vehicles. With interest rising in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a lower-cost, low-emissions fuel for light-duty fleets, this cooperative effort is aimed at bringing fleet owners and CNG-fueled vehicles together.
