The City of Montreal will be adding side guards to its heavy truck fleet within the next five years. The goal is to prevent serious and fatal injuries of cyclists and pedestrians who are walking or cycling near heavy trucks. The measure was announced by Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montreal. Also, on September 2, Energy Minister Andrew Younger revealed a new funding project to help municipalities add alternative fuel vehicles into their fleets.

The recent successes in the automotive industry continue unabated, with commercial fleet showing considerable uptick in August. The sales figures bode well for the industry, even in the face of unprecedented vehicle recalls during the eight months of 2014 thus far. Experts who feared that the continued bad press for the OEMs would cut down sales have been consistently surprised by the industry's resilience and the consumer demand for product.

Financial lenders are no longer relying on subprime offerings, which could affect the current vehicle sales boom. The percentage of new vehicle loans going to consumers in the subprime and deep subprime segments was at 15.1 percent in Q2 2014, down from 22.1 percent in Q2 2013, according to Experian Automotive. Subprime buyers have credit scores ranging from 619 down to 550 while deep subprime is anyone below 550.

Electric carmaker Tesla, announced on September 3 its plans to build its giant battery factory in Nevada after a five-state competition. The announcement was not formally issued until September 4. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said previously that the winning state would be expected to provide a tax incentives worth about $400 million, a level that would require legislative action in Nevada.

Automotive fleet management and services provider Wheels, Inc., announced on September 5 that Dan Frank has been promoted to President of the company. In his new role, Frank is in charge of virtually all of Wheels’ business units. Dan becomes just the third president in Wheels’ 75-year history.

An ambitious bill in California would steer carbon taxes into the lofty goal of putting one million electric vehicles on the road in the coming decade. The state’s Legislature sent SB-1275, aka the "Charge Ahead California Initiative," to Governor Jerry Brown. The bill was approved in both chambers and contains a suite of incentives to encourage Californians to swap gas-powered vehicles for hybrids and electric vehicles.

In Maryland, a grant program would address expanding the natural gas vehicle fueling network to help alleviate "range anxiety" among operators. The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) and the state's Clean Cities program are jointly seeking applications for a natural gas refilling station grant program to help advance the state's fueling infrastructure.
