The St. Louis Gateway Chapter meeting on September 17 "drove into" the subject of liability, illustrated by two differing scenarios. Perhaps "drove into" is the wrong phrase, however! The meeting took place at the offices of pharmaceutical company Actavis, St. Louis, MO, and approximately 25 attendees took in the important information.

The future is coming whether one plans for it or not. NAFA Members take the view that preparation is essential, and with that on October 14, NAFA's Mid-America Chapter Meeting "Future Technologies in Fleet" (at the Grand Café, in Kansas City, MO) neatly fit into that strategy. The National Research Council of Canada has made public a new initiative called Fleet Forward 2020. This new program allows fleet managers to have access to innovative research and engineering services in order to ameliorate fuel efficiency, cut repair and maintenance costs, and reduce environmental impacts.

That’s leading to stricter enforcement and likely changes to testing procedures by the Environmental Protection Agency which oversees fuel economy regulations.

Takata’s defective airbags forced another automaker to recall additional vehicles today as Toyota announced it is recalling 247,000 vehicles with airbags that may rupture. The Japanese maker has already recalled more than 2.2 million vehicles for faulty Takata inflators. This action follows a series of recalls by several automakers that used Takata’s airbags in their vehicles, including Chrysler, General Motors, Ford, Honda, BMW, and others.

Falling oil and gasoline prices have sent oil company stocks tumbling, but oil experts say the boom in American energy production shows no signs of slowing down, keeping the market flush with crude and gasoline prices low. Even after a drop of as much as 25 percent in oil prices since early summer, several government and private reports say that it would take a drop of $10 to $20 a barrel more — to as low as $60 a barrel — to slow production even modestly.

Goodyear will begin testing its Air Maintenance Technology (AMT) for commercial vehicles on U.S. trucking fleets in the next few months as part of a research project supported by U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Vehicle Technology. Since 2011, the tire manufacturer has been developing and testing AMT to aid in fuel savings and carbon dioxide reductions, while potentially improving tire life, casing durability and safety, and eliminating need for manually inflating tires.

Ford is cutting the sticker price of the fully battery-powered plug-in Focus Electric by a flat $6,000. That’s on top of a $4,000 price reduction on the same vehicle a year ago. A reason for underwhelming sales of the Focus Electric—and for many alternative-fuel cars in general, for that matter—is simply that gas prices have been getting cheaper and cheaper.

Representatives from ExxonMobil and Iowa State met in late-October to talk about the new ExxonMobil Biofuels research program being implemented at the University. The ExxonMobile Biofuels program will focus on two separate studies associated with the fast pyrolysis of biomass which is the process of rapidly heating biomass without oxygen to create liquid bio-oil.
