A little bit of the past, and a whole lot of the future was on display at the North American Green Fleet Forum, held at the California Automobile Museum in Sacramento, CA, on October 15 and 16. With a back drop of historical, vintage, and classic cars, NAFA's NorCal-Northern Nevada Chapter members and attendees examined the new lineup of sustainability-minded hydrogen, electric, propane, CNG, and LNG fueled vehicles and equipment, along with various hybrids of all makes and models.

Vancouver’s 2040 Transportation Plan has recently been adopted by City Council and is a result of a longstanding strategy to expand the city’s transportation system due to population growth. More specifically, the plan focuses on encouraging city inhabitants to commute by foot, bike, or public transit.

Wholesale used vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally adjusted basis) ticked up in October, after declining in each of the previous five months. The October Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index reading was 121.8, a decline of 0.4 percent from a year ago.

The California State Board of Equalization is readying the implementation of revisions to Assembly Bill 1907, which includes new use fuel tax rates for compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) that is used as a fuel in motor vehicles, which will take effect January 1, 2015.

Ford Motor Co. said on November 4 that it was recalling 202,241 vehicles in five North American campaigns covering several issues, including an incorrect repair in a previous recall. The automaker said it was aware of one accident in the case of the improperly repaired vehicles, but no injuries related to any of the issues. The order includes the Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car vehicles from model years 2005 through 2011.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on November 3 it will examine whether Honda Motor Co Ltd failed to report deaths or injuries involving air bags that are now part of a sweeping federal review. Regulators gave Honda three weeks to answer detailed questions about how it sought and logged accident reports for more than a decade. This order, which includes 34 points, must be answered under oath.

A spokesman for the automaker said it was increasing its outreach to owners through social media and a new call center staffed with 72 employees dedicated to contacting those who have not scheduled repairs. But even owners who requested repairs months ago have been waiting, with dealers managing waiting lists and dozens of drivers writing to federal regulators in recent weeks asking why it was taking so long. Some of them are also raising safety concerns about the drawn-out timetable.

It was with great sadness that NAFA learned of the passing of Robert Whitfield, a Club NAFA member who had been with the Association for 51 years. He passed in October. Robert was Member of the Sunshine State Chapter.

When it comes to deploying plug-in electric cars in municipal fleets, Indianapolis, IN appears to be leading the way. The city announced in late-October that it will replace 425 non-police-pursuit vehicles with electric cars and plug-in hybrids by early 2016, as it works toward a goal of converting the entire fleet to "post-oil technology" by 2025.

On November 3, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its largest Clean Air Act (CAA) settlement ever in an enforcement action against Hyundai and Kia. EPA alleged that the two automakers inflated the certification of their cars’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As a result, the car companies agreed to pay a $100 million penalty, forfeit 4.75 million GHG emission credits, and spend millions of dollars to develop better emission testing procedures to prevent future violations.
