Congratulations are in order for NAFA Member Patrick T. Barrett, MPA/CAFM, Director, University of Nebraska Transportation Services. The University has awards from the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) and the Central Association of College and University Business Officers (CACUBO) for a car rental system that has streamlined the process and allowed for more revenue opportunities. The Energy Department and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on November 6 released the 2015 Fuel Economy Guide, providing a resource for consumers to choose the most fuel-efficient vehicles. The Energy Department and EPA will update the guide online as more 2015 vehicles become available.

The deadline to file claims for benefits from General Motors victims fund was extended by one month to January 31, 2015, in an effort to ensure that anyone eligible to file a claim had been contacted and the time necessary to compile the information needed to file.

On November 18 Ford Motor Co. said it is recalling about 65,000 Fusion sedans in North America because the key can be removed from the ignition, even if the car is not in the "park" position 30 minutes after the ignition is off. Ford said it is not aware of any injuries or crashes as a result of this issue. Affected are some 2014 and 2015 model year Fusion sedans, including Ford's primary version as well as Energi and hybrid versions built through October 31.

Orange County, North Carolina's public vehicle fleet was one of ten in the state recognized as having an NC Smart Fleet, acknowledging efforts to cut down on emissions from town vehicles. Chapel Hill was also a recipient of the award. 2014 is the first year of the awards, which were based on data from one to three years of fleet traffic.

The CAFM certification program offers the most up-to-date fleet management education. It was with great sadness that NAFA learned of the passing of Robert Whitfield, a Club NAFA member who had been with the Association for 51 years. He passed in October. Robert was Member of the Sunshine State Chapter.

Via Motors, the small Utah company fronted by former GM Executive Robert Lutz, has announced that it has received official certification from the U.S. EPA to enable it to start delivering its eREV Van to customers across the U.S. The Via range of plug-in commercial vehicles are factory conversions of the Chevrolet Silvarado pickup truck and Chevrolet Express van, turning them from standard V8 vehicles into range-extended plug-ins.

Toyota says it will launch its new hydrogen-powered Mirai this month, bringing its first fuel-cell vehicle to market a bit ahead of its original schedule. Honda, meanwhile, revealed an updated prototype of the hydrogen car it plans to bring to market, though its own plans may be slightly delayed. Nonetheless, it would join not just Toyota but also Hyundai in marketing the alternative powertrain technology.
