INDUSTRY NEWS

Embattled Japanese airbag supplier Takata is shaking up its top management team – even as top managers take pay cuts of as much as fifty percent. But the company is so far maintaining its position that there is no need to expand the recall of airbags linked to a potentially deadly problem that can result in the devices spewing shrapnel into the passenger compartment after a crash.

Ford Motor Co. said on December 18 it will expand a driver-side air bag recall nationwide, adding 447,310 additional vehicles as demanded by the U.S. government — the third of five automakers to do so. Under government pressure, the automaker has recalled 502,489 vehicles for Takata driver-side air bags, along with another 36,000 for passenger-side air bags. The air bags can send shrapnel into drivers and passengers. Until now, most of the vehicles recalled were in high-humidity areas.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Altec Industries issued a recall on 1,857 aerial devices because they’re at risk for inadvertent boom movement during cool weather. The model-years in question range 1999-2014. This recall was initially issued on November 21.

General Motors Co. customers won a key ally in their quest for $10 billion in compensation: the automaker's bankrupt predecessor, which said switch defects were illegally hidden from consumers during the company's 2009 bailout. A trust that pays the bankrupt company's creditors urged a judge to set aside earlier rulings that told the now-profitable GM it needn't pay customers for price drops of older, recalled vehicles. Drivers who were denied their rights in his court five years ago are entitled to sue now, it said in a December 16, 2014 court filing.

SUSTAINABILITY

Electric vehicle owners in Santa Cruz, CA have enjoyed free metered and garage parking and charging since the city first began installing charging stations in 2002. After January 1, 2015, however, electric vehicle users will join the ranks of traditional vehicle users and be charged for parking at all for-pay locations. Charging an electric vehicle will remain free.

A network of charging stations could make a road trip from St. Louis to Chicago more likely in an electric vehicle, without having to haul a generator. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn’s office has announced an initiative to add seven fast-charge stations between the metro-east and Chicago along the historic Route 66: Edwardsville, Carlinville, Springfield, Lincoln, Normal, Pontiac, Dwight, and Plainfield.
