NAFA CHAPTER NEWS

The Old Dominion Chapter kicked off the meeting on February 11 at the Richmond, VA location of the Department of Motor Vehicles by addressing a couple house-keeping issues. The 2015 budget was presented and approved and the slate of officers was elected. Afterward, Bill Griffiths, Division Chief with the Division of Fleet Management in Montgomery County, MD, shared how your vehicle data should tell a story for others to understand, and that's how it becomes real to them.

Risk behaviors impact the well-being of drivers and those who share the roads with them. Bad drivers can cause your vehicles severe problems outside of just crashes, and the stigma and liability attached to fleets that tolerate unsafe drivers is immense, and increasing regularly. Face it and make positive changes with your fleet, starting with attending this important session!

The Environmental Protection Agency said on February 23 it is issuing new guidelines to automakers for conducting fuel economy testing. The move comes after major automakers have had to restate miles-per-gallon ratings for certain models. The guidelines detail how vehicles must be prepared before being tested — including what is an acceptable level of wear on the tires and how vehicles should be broken in prior to testing.

INDUSTRY NEWS

After securing an important court victory in January, General Motors is on the precipice of a potentially devastating loss as the federal bankruptcy judge that approved the maker’s plan is rethinking the company’s liability shield. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Gerber heard arguments about whether or not GM can keep the shield, which blocks victims of the company’s faulty ignition switches from suing the automaker, which exited bankruptcy in 2009.

Takata’s refusal to fully cooperate in a federal investigation of its exploding airbags responsible for the recall of more than 18 million vehicles will now cost them more than bad publicity – the company’s going to pony up $14,000 a day. The faulty inflators can explode and spew shrapnel into passenger cabin. At least six people have been killed worldwide due to the problem. The inflators are in cars made by 10 auto companies, which have all issued recalls for the affected vehicles.

Until about 18 months ago, car makers generally downplayed the threat of a hack attack on the increasingly sophisticated systems found on-board a modern automobile. The spotlight is now shining on their vulnerability as highlighted on the CBS news program 60 Minutes, a contentious report from the staff of Massachusetts Senator Edward Markey, an article in NAFA FLEETSolutions magazine as recently as last year, and the move by BMW to send out a security patch to some 2.2 million vehicles with connectivity systems.

Apple has had a remarkable run with the iPhone, but investors will be looking for the next big thing. The company has been poaching R&D leaders from car companies and mysterious minivans loaded with their equipment — possibly disguised electric vehicles — have been spotted recently on California streets.

A bill working its way through the Washington State legislature would clarify the use of unmarked police vehicles. Opponents say the bill would require citizens to stop for every patrol vehicle with flashing lights. They also say it will give departments no reason to clearly mark any station vehicles and that in turn will embolden impersonators, putting the public's safety at risk.

On February 13 at the Wall, New Jersey location of New Jersey Natural Gas, these and other questions were discussed. Researchers at the University of California, Riverside’s Bourns College of Engineering have developed a novel paper-like material for lithium-ion batteries. It has the potential to boost by several times the specific energy, or amount of energy that can be delivered per unit weight of the battery. This paper-like material is composed of sponge-like silicon nanofibers more than 100 times thinner than human hair. It could be used in batteries for electric vehicles and personal electronics.
