NAFA‘s Fleet Excellence Awards (FLEXYs) is clearly the industry’s biggest and most important awards event. In just its third year, this year’s FLEXYs have already outgrown its venue and are being moved to the Orange County Convention Center to accommodate the expected crowd of 1,400 fleet professionals. NAFA’s 2015 FLEXY Awards will take place Tuesday, April 14, at 5:45 pm in Hall D of the Orange County Convention Center. The FLEXYs were originally scheduled to be in the ballroom of the Rosen Centre Hotel.

LeasePlan Corporation, one of Europe’s biggest automobile leasing and fleet managers, said on March 31 that its owner, Global Mobility Holding, was in discussions regarding selling the Dutch company and its U.S. fleet management division to a group of investors.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker said it is recalling 212,911 Ford Explorer SUVs and Ford Police Interceptor utility vehicles from model years 2011 to 2013 because a spring that controls the interior door handle may become loose and cause the door to become unlatched in a side-impact crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Honda is adding nearly 105,000 vehicles to its growing U.S. recall of driver's side air bag inflators that can explode with too much force. The added vehicles include nearly 89,000 Pilot SUVs from the 2008 model year, as well as about 11,000 Civics from 2004, and another 5,000 Accords from the 2001 model year.

When his administration stopped Tesla from selling its electric cars directly to customers at its New Jersey showrooms one year ago, Gov. Chris Christie blamed the state Legislature for writing the law he said forced him to act. Now the Legislature has acted to change that law, with the state Senate giving final legislative passage to a bill that would allow Tesla to restart sales at its two New Jersey showrooms, and to open two more.

GM is planning to launch the 2016 version of Chevrolet’s Malibu. The car is important to GM because, if the Malibu were to be successful, it would enter the midsize sedan segment, the largest new-car segment in the U.S., and one in which the company has been previously outdone by a number of foreign car brands such as Hyundai, Honda, and Toyota.

Vacuum manufacturer Dyson has invested $15m in an innovative energy storage company that could potentially provide electric cars with cheaper, lighter, and more powerful batteries that could run 600 miles on one charge. Sakti3, a spin-out company from the University of Michigan, has produced a solid state battery that removes the need for the liquid that is traditionally found in today's lithium-ion cells.

Research on the cellulosome, a finger-like system of proteins used by bacteria in cow stomachs to digest plants, has fertile ground for application to benefit society. Biofuels made from non-food plant such as corn stalks or straw are currently too costly to produce at scale because the enzymes needed to digest the tough material are expensive.

Scrap-It, a non-profit society, is offering British Columbians a $3,250 rebate to trade in old vehicles for electric cars which the group says will work in conjunction with a soon-to-be-announced provincial government initiative. The organization plans to give British Columbia residents a rebate when they trade in a car made on or before 2000 for one of eleven different kinds of electric vehicles.
