One of the highlights of NAFA’s annual Institute & Expo conference each year is the Chapter Recognition Luncheon. It’s a time to relax, network with colleagues, and have fun with fellow fleet professionals within their NAFA Chapter. It’s also a time in which NAFA highlights the work of one NAFA Affiliate and one Member for their tremendous efforts in supporting their local chapter. NAFA's Outstanding Chapter Service Award honors exceptional commitment to the Association's chapters.

On March 19, the St. Louis Gateway Chapter discussed the most important aspect of any organization with a vehicle component: driver risk and traffic safety. The meeting, which took place at the Missouri Department of Transportation's Transportation Management Center in Chesterfield, brought in 21 members, including five first-time attendees.

The second Honorary Lifetime Membership Award went to Greg Asadoorian, described as a tireless advocate for the fleet industry in general and of NAFA in particular. Greg has been the "face" of the New England Chapter for many years. He recruits new volunteers at every meeting helping to ensure that the chapter has a continued flow of "new blood" and fresh ideas.

NAFA President Ruth Alfson, CAFM®, and NAFA Vice President Bryan Flansburg, CAFM®, announced the first of 2015's Honorary Lifetime Membership Award winners during the third annual Fleet Excellence Awards. Bob Johnson, NTEA Director of Fleet Relations, has over 50 years of experience in utility fleet, and heavy equipment maintenance and design. Bob has been a dedicated proponent of fleet and industries that require transportation services. He’s also been a great friend of NAFA!

Excitement abounded on the evening of April 14 as the winners of the 2015 FLEXY Awards ascended the stage and claimed their awards. The FLEXYs are open to all fleet professionals, regardless of whether or not they were members of NAFA, and take place during the opening night celebration of NAFA's Institute & Expo.

Ontario has now recovered from the 2008-2009 recession and is exceeding expectations regarding deficit targets. In order to reach a balanced budget by 2017-2018, the estimated deficit is $1.6 billion as opposed to $10.9 billion. It is fair to say that Ontario seems on the right track in terms of economic recovery.

A failure of the steering wheel clock spring/steering column control module (SCCM) "results in a loss of connectivity of the steering wheel electrical devices to the rest of the vehicle, potentially affecting the performance of the driver-side airbag, as well as the other steering-wheel-mounted components," NHTSA said in its summary of the probe.

Automakers point to the looming 54.5 mpg fuel economy mandate as one of the primary reason that they’re continuing to pursue alternative fuel vehicles despite the low gas prices currently enjoyed in the U.S. That dedication is paying off, according to an Environmental Protection Agency study, which shows 2013 vehicles are reducing greenhouse gases and improving mileage on a pace to get them to the tough 2025 standard.

On April 8, Royal Dutch Shell agreed to buy the BG Group for $70 billion. It is the first major deal for an oil and gas producer since prices started falling last summer. In buying BG, Shell is concentrating on the fast-growing business of producing and selling liquefied natural gas. It will also become a major player in Brazil’s offshore oil fields, where Shell’s exposure has been small.

The Canadian government announced it is selling its $2.7 billion stake in General Motors Co. to Goldman, Sachs & Co. on April 7. The Canada GEN Investment Corp., a subsidiary of Canada Development Investment Corp., plans to sell its 73.4 million shares of GM in a single unregistered block.

Teenagers, the most crash-prone drivers on U.S. roads, may be even more dangerous than thought. A review of in-car video and audio recordings of teen drivers moments before they crashed found some kind of distraction -- such as grooming, mobile-phone use or even dancing -- was a factor in four times as many accidents than previously estimated, AAA said.

When it comes to car shopping, it's not uncommon for young adults to turn to their parents for experienced tips and advice. But a new study from car buying platform Edmunds.com suggests that the younger, tech-savvy generation is quickly becoming a more educated and self-sufficient group of buyers due to their prolific use of mobile devices during the car shopping process.

A new Intelligent Speed Limiter is expected to be launched by Ford this year. A number of vehicles now display the local speed limit on their navigation screens, some using cameras to ensure that the limit hasn’t changed since the navigation database was created. The system being introduced in the next-generation Ford S-Max people-mover goes the next step, and actually controls the speed of the vehicle itself.

Fleet Response announced Mark Genger, formerly Manager of Finance and Regional Sales Manager, has been promoted to Director of Risk and Finance. In his new role, Genger will continue to be responsible for the accounting department and managing key corporate financial relationships, in addition to overseeing risk management.

The report shows overall sales for the year fell slightly as a result of the dramatic drop in the price of oil that occurred in the second half of the year and the impact this had largely on sales of light-duty NGVs to oil and gas exploration companies. Meanwhile, on March 26 Representatives Todd Young (R-IN), John Larson (D-CT), Mac Thornberry (R-TX), and Ron Kind (D-WI) introduced H.R. 1665, the Alternative Fuel Tax Parity Act.

Package delivery giant UPS announced that it is building an additional 15 compressed natural gas fuel stations and adding 1,400 more CNG vehicles over the next year. Twelve of the CNG stations will be in new natural gas vehicle deployment areas, and three will replace existing CNG stations with higher capacity equipment. UPS currently has 5,088 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles in its global fleet.
