Summer has arrived and in the Northeast it is time for the second annual Tri-Chapter Joint Meeting at a Philadelphia-NYC baseball game. This year over 125 members of the New York-InterCounty, New Jersey, and Philadelphia chapters gathered together on June 24 in the Audi Club Suite at Yankee Stadium to watch the New York Yankees take on the Philadelphia Phillies in the finale of a three game series.

On June 18, the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter met at Mario's Restaurant in Moon Township, PA. NAFA Director of Professional Development Kate Vigneau, CAFM ®, presented the educational sessions "How to Put Generations of Knowledge to Work for You" and "Getting What You Need From the RFP Process."

The fight over the Renewable Fuel Standard, which mandates the use of biofuels like ethanol, has shifted to the halls of Congress, with farm and ethanol groups warning lawmakers that changing the mandate could impede investment in biofuels and hurt the rural economy. Opponents of the Renewable Fuel Standard, led by the American Petroleum Institute, have called for Congress to repeal or drastically reform the measure.

Wholesale used vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally adjusted basis) inched up in June after declining in each of the previous four months. This brought the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index to a reading of 123.9 in June, which represented a decline of 0.1 percent from a year ago.

General Motors has announced a new service action covering 686,000 midsize crossover-utility vehicles (CUV) because their rear liftgates could fail. The latest recall by GM – which has taken major heat for safety problems over the last eighteen months – covers Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia CUVs sold during the 2008 through 2012 model-year, 2009 through 2012 model-year Chevrolet Traverses, and 2007 through 2010 model-year Saturn Outlooks.

Ford’s recall of more than 400,000 cars in North America to fix a software bug may be just the first of many for the motor industry as automobiles become increasingly complex, security researchers warn. A total of 433,000 2015 Focus, C-MAX, and Escape cars are being recalled to dealerships for a software update as a result of the snafu – which means drivers may not be able to turn off engines on some of the latest vehicles, even if they remove the ignition key.

Car companies say outsized dashboard displays that behave more like smart phones will boost revenue and attract buyers. And they also insist the new screens will make driving less dangerous, because of well-integrated voice controls and large touch screens that will keep drivers from fumbling with more dangerous mobile phones. But the increasingly elaborate screens have also sparked a broad debate about how much technology is appropriate in a car.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles faces hefty fines from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) which accused the maker of misleading federal safety regulators. FCA officials came in for sharp criticism during a hearing in Washington in late-June, with NHTSA officials accusing the maker of repeatedly keeping it "in the dark" about safety problems. The unprecedented session was called to examine Fiat Chrysler’s handling of 23 separate recalls covering eleven million vehicles.

Google Inc. is expanding its autonomous vehicle testing to Austin, Texas — a shift from its testing in Silicon Valley. The search-engine giant said a self-driving Lexus RX450h SUV is undergoing testing in Austin. The company primarily has been testing vehicles since 2009 around Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California. The company said it’s now time get experience in places with different driving environments, traffic patterns, and road conditions.

Claude Masters, CAFM ®, and Sheryl Grossman retired from their respective jobs after decades of service, while Joe LaRosa inked an agreement to provide consulting services for Mercury Associates. All have indicated they will be pursuing employment opportunities that will enable them to remain NAFA Members and, therefore, eligible to remain on the NAFA Board of Trustees.

Anthony Warren Feirer, age 83 of Leonia, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. He was known to NAFA members formally as A. Warren Feirer, or just Warren when he was in present company. He served as the Association's President during 1979-1981.

In early-July, Oregon became the first state in the U.S. to give drivers the option to be taxed by the mile instead of by the fuel they use. This new tax treats all cars the same, regardless of their fuel efficiency, and charges drivers based on the wear and tear they put on the road. Under the new program, called OReGO, drivers will only pay for the miles they drive.

BMW is developing fuel cells with Japanese partner Toyota Motor Corp., and it demonstrated a 5-Series Gran Turismo prototype in June that uses the companies’ joint technology. The model is part of the car industry’s multibillion-dollar effort to create alternative powering setups and improve fuel use to meet tightening emissions rules.

The gas mileage rating of new vehicles purchased by American consumers slipped in June, according to researchers at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI). The average fuel economy printed on the window stickers of cars, light trucks, vans, and SUVs purchased in June was 25.4 mpg, down from 25.5 mpg in May, the researchers said.

Through the first five months of 2015, according to data from Hybridcars.com, plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) sales are down in the United States by four percent from 2014. This is due, in part, to the current price of gasoline being lower than the 2014 price by $0.89 cents per gallon (per the U.S. Energy Information Administration). The higher upfront cost of PEVs is clearly one of the major hurdles to greater electric vehicle (EV) sales, along with greater consumer awareness of their benefits in reduced fuel cost, performance, and drivability.
