While people might be inclined to wipe the hard drives of computers or smartphones they give away, many need to be reminded to do the same for their cars. Fleet managers in the U.K. are being urged to remind company car drivers to reset in-vehicle multi-media systems ahead of remarketing amid possible security concerns. It's a process worth noting on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean as vehicles -- and the fleets that run them -- become more reliant on the computing power of their various assets.

A pair of veteran cybersecurity researchers have shown they can use the Internet to turn off a car's engine as it drives, sharply escalating the stakes in the debate about the safety of increasingly connected cars and trucks. In a controlled test, they turned on the Jeep Cherokee’s radio and activated other inessential features before rewriting code embedded in the entertainment system hardware to issue commands through the internal network to steering, brakes, and the engine.

While a number of automakers, as well as tech giant Google, are already testing autonomous vehicles on public roads, MCity will allow them "to take the unusual things that happen on the road and repeat them as often as we want," helping to ensure that those vehicles will be able to deal with the range of challenges human drivers might face at one point or another.

New research appears to show that pure gasoline--known as G100 or E0--is more corrosive to various engine parts than is E10. At least that's the claim of a post on the website of the Urban Air Initiative, a group that works to promote ethanol use to reduce or eliminate the adverse effects on public health of what are called the aromatic compounds in gasoline. There is concern that the science in the study has not been rigorously scrutinized and conclusions from it may be speculative.

On July 29, UPS announced that it will buy as much as 46 million gallons of renewable diesel over the next three years, helping the company reach a goal of displacing twelve percent of the petroleum-based fuels in its ground fleet by 2017. The renewable fuels, from three suppliers, are chemically so close to their petroleum-based counterparts that they can replace them in engines and pipelines.
