The fact is, NAFA’s bylaws have ALWAYS permitted individuals who perform the usual and customary duties of a motor vehicle fleet administrator — regardless of their employer — to be Members of the association, provided their duties in no way include the sale, lease, and/or rental of products or services provided by their employer.

The Tri-State Chapter meeting hosted their annual Golf Outing and Annual Meeting in Cincinnati Ohio on August 21. The meeting was held at the Sharon Woods Golf Course in Sharonville, OH. The chapter had a morning breakfast meeting where Rob Sizemore, Chapter Chair updated the group on the chapters annual accomplishments and reviewed the remaining years upcoming meetings. Special thanks to Joe Henry with ARI for organizing the golf outing, and to Brian Lively and Ford Motor Company for sponsoring the lunch.

Sandy Leonard, Division Manager of Fleet Services for the City of Auburn, Alabama, has been tapped to become NAFA Fleet Management Association's Central Region Trustee, effective immediately. He succeeds Michele Ryan, CAFM ®, who resigned the position on August 23, citing a new non-fleet employment opportunity as the primary factor. Leonard has been a Member of NAFA since 2002.

In July, NAFA Immediate Past President Claude Masters, CAFM ®, announced his retirement from Florida Power & Light. As is stipulated in NAFA's bylaws, "Members of the Board of Trustees, except for the Affiliate Trustee, are required to perform the usual and customary duties of a fleet manager; because Masters does not hold such a position, he will be stepping aside from his role as Immediate Past President. Douglas Weichman, CAFM ®, Immediate Past President 2013-2015, has graciously accepted this responsibility to replace Masters.

NAFA’s individual certificates of completion offer education that is targeted to individual fleet disciplines. Fleet professionals can enroll in only the courses of study they require for their work situation. Enrolling in as many or as few programs as they need gives the student empowerment with regard to the time they spend in study. NAFA’s certificate program also helps develop advanced fleet knowledge should the student decide to pursue the separate Certified Automotive Fleet Management (CAFM ®) designation later.

After Labor Day, Congress will decide whether to extend the federal tax incentives for the use of biodiesel, propane, and natural gas. During the next several weeks, NAFA will be making the case to Congress that these incentives should continue.If you have taken advantage of federal incentives, please provide a brief case study or example of how these tax incentives enabled you to add alternative fuel vehicles to your fleet. On August 25, Element Financial Corporation announced that Kristi Webb has been appointed as the new President and CEO of Element's fleet management business and Jim Halliday has been appointed as Executive Vice President, Element Financial Corporation. Element has promoted Sébastien Blondin to President in Canada.

After years of decline, there’s been a sudden surge in highway fatalities in the U.S. this year, and if the current trend continues, the U.S. could see the roadway death toll rise to its highest level since 2007, according to the National Safety Council. The financial impact has also risen sharply this year, reports the NSC, climbing by 24 percent during the first half of this year when deaths, injuries, and property damage are factored in.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has revised downward the number of recalled U.S. vehicles with defective Takata air bag inflators to 19.2 million from an estimated 30 million, according to the federal safety agency. NHTSA earlier had cited 34 million defective inflators in 30 million U.S. vehicles, but the figures were revised in part to double-counting. The official said the numbers could continue to be revised.

Ford Motor Co. said on August 18 it is recalling 26,400 heavy duty F-650 and F-750 trucks in North America because the seat belts may not be anchored in the correct position. The automaker said the recall covers the 2011-2013 and 2015 model year trucks that don’t comply with a federal safety standard.

The Obama administration on August 17 granted Royal Dutch Shell the final permit to drill for oil and gas in the Arctic for the first time since 2012, a move environmentalists vowed to fight. The permit was expected as the department had previously approved Shell's exploration program before the Fennica, an icebreaker the company leases that carries emergency well-plugging equipment, hit uncharted shoals in southern Alaska.

Analyst Adam Jonas says Tesla has such a lead on connected, electric cars compared to rivals that it is likely to create a new division with a name like Tesla Mobility. Jonas says the launch of a "Tesla Mobility 1.0 urban transport Position on Demand Service" would come after introduction of the electric car maker's Model 3 in 2017, the car that is aimed at having a lower cost and wider appeal.

The City of Atlanta announced on August 24 it will deploy one of the largest municipal fleets of electric vehicles in the United States by the end of 2015 under legislation approved by the Atlanta City Council. The measure is part of Mayor Kasim Reed’s agenda to ensure that Atlanta is one of the nation’s leading cities for sustainability, and will reduce the city’s dependence on fossil fuels while saving taxpayers thousands of dollars per year.

A known factor in increasing the consumption of fuel, and increasing emissions from vehicles, is "drag" or the amount of weight a motor needs to work against. Several manufacturers are working on that. Ford made news with its aluminum-body 2015 F-150. Chemical manufacturer DuPont is currently working on high-performance polymers meant to withstand the punishment of driving conditions. In both cases, the goal is to reduce the weight (and the drag) with the vehicles.

The lowest oil prices in six years are hitting biofuel producers two ways: They’re making ethanol less attractive as a blend for gasoline, and emboldening the arguments of petroleum backers who say the U.S. law mandating consumption of the fuel alternative is obsolete, Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services Inc. said in a report on August 19.

The UK government is planning on testing a special road surface that actually charges your car as you drive. In mid-August, the UK government announced that it wants to begin testing this tech, and soon. Andrew Jones, Highways England and Transport Minister said that off-road trials of dynamic wireless power transfer technology are expected to start later this year and run for 18 months before the on-road testing begins.
