"We had a 'fleet manager on trial' skit," said South Central Chapter Chair Bill Sterner, CAFM ®/CEM. The mock court case hinged on a provocative question: can your organization be held liable for not having safety equipment and technology in your vehicles, and those vehicles are subsequently involved in a crash?

Jeremy Guddat from the Colorado State Patrol will be presenting Managing Commercial Fleet Operations, featuring updates on numerous changes to Commercial Motor Vehicles. The topics will include: what a commercial vehicle is, how to navigate the FMCSRs as they relate to qualifying drivers, Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDL), drug and alcohol testing, vehicle operations, tracking hours of service, and vehicle maintenance.

A tour of the Sacramento CNG Station and Natural Gas Compliant Shop will take place on the afternoon of October 14 and a reception will be held that evening. In late-September, Fleet Manager Carl Nelson announced his retirement from AM-Liner East, Inc. in Berryville, VA. Nelson, a longtime NAFA Member and a Goill Award winner in 2012, said of his decision to leave AM-Liner East: "My blood pressure has already dropped 40 points."

About 11 million Volkswagen vehicles worldwide have diesel engines with software "irregularities," as the scandal that started in the U.S. widens. Examinations have shown that the emission-control software built into U.S. models that were found to be violating U.S. clean air rules has also been used in other VW group diesel cars. "As C.E.O. I accept responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines," CEO Martin Winterkorn said, but continued, "I am not aware of any wrong doing on my part."

The Summit, New Jersey Police Department recently participated in the 20th annual Police Cruise Night held at Faulkner Buick GMC in West Chester, PA. The Cruise Night is one of the largest law enforcement car shows in the Northeast region. NAFA Affiliate Steve Dragon has been the Fleet Sales Manager for the Faulkner Fleet Group since 1995. He has been involved in fleet sales since 1985.

Royal Dutch Shell's abrupt announcement on September 28, that it would cease all offshore drilling in the Arctic, comes after spending $7 billion over several years to explore a single well. Shell said in a statement that it "found indications of oil and gas...but these are not sufficient to warrant further exploration."

NAFA’s individual certificates of completion offer education that is targeted to individual fleet disciplines. Fleet professionals can enroll in only the courses of study they require for their work situation. Enrolling in as many or as few programs as they need gives the student empowerment with regard to the time they spend in study. NAFA’s certificate program also helps develop advanced fleet knowledge should the student decide to pursue the separate Certified Automotive Fleet Management (CAFM ®) designation later.

Despite remarkably low gas prices – the biggest disincentive to electric vehicle purchases – EV sales are continuing to ramp up in the U.S. and globally. The global number just surpassed one million units last month. As of August 2015 about 985,000 units had been sold worldwide, not including Japanese sales numbers which were not reported yet.

Apple Inc. is accelerating efforts to build an electric car, designating it internally as a "committed project" and setting a target ship date for 2019, according to people familiar with the matter. The go-ahead came after the company spent more than a year investigating the feasibility of an Apple-branded car, including meetings with two groups of government officials in California. Leaders of the project, code-named Titan, have been given permission to triple the 600-person team, the people familiar with the matter said.

As part of the Obama Administration’s strategy to increase energy productivity and cut emissions the Energy Department announced an investment of nearly $55 million for 24 projects to develop and deploy vehicle technologies that will strengthen the U.S. clean energy economy. These technologies will play a key role in increasing fuel efficiency and reducing petroleum consumption, while also supporting the Energy Department’s EV Everywhere Grand Challenge to make plug-in electric vehicles as affordable to own and operate as today's gasoline-powered vehicles by 2022.
