NAFA CHAPTER NEWS

John Cruickshank, Attorney at Alaniz and Schraeder, provided a presentation on legal issues relative to fleets. "We had a 'fleet manager on trial' skit," said South Central Chapter Chair Bill Sterner, CAFM®/CEM. The mock court case hinged on a provocative question: can your organization be held liable for not having safety equipment and technology in your vehicles, and those vehicles are subsequently involved in a crash?

NAFA MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS

Earning CAFM® certification is a major achievement that requires many months of study and diligence. It is rare that someone is able to pass all the CAFM® module tests in one go. Paul D. Johnson joined a very elite group in September by taking on the CAFM® tests at one time and passing all of them. NAFAConnection asked Paul how he did it.

INDUSTRY NEWS

About 11 million Volkswagen vehicles worldwide have diesel engines with software "irregularities," as the scandal that started in the U.S. widens. Examinations have shown that the emission-control software built into U.S. models that were found to be violating U.S. clean air rules has also been used in other VW group diesel cars. "As C.E.O. I accept responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines," CEO Martin Winterkorn said, but continued, "I am not aware of any wrong doing on my part."

NAFA’s individual certificates of completion offer education that is targeted to individual fleet disciplines. Fleet professionals can enroll in only the courses of study they require for their work situation. Enrolling in as many or as few programs as they need gives the student empowerment with regard to the time they spend in study. NAFA’s certificate program also helps develop advanced fleet knowledge should the student decide to pursue the separate Certified Automotive Fleet Management (CAFM®) designation later.

The global number just surpassed one million units last month. As of August 2015 about 985,000 units had been sold worldwide, not including Japanese sales numbers which were not reported yet.

Apple Inc. is accelerating efforts to build an electric car, designating it internally as a "committed project" and setting a target ship date for 2019, according to people familiar with the matter. The go-ahead came after the company spent more than a year investigating the feasibility of an Apple-branded car, including meetings with two groups of government officials in California. Leaders of the project, code-named Titan, have been given permission to triple the 600-person team, the people familiar with the matter said.
