NAFA's New Jersey Chapter held their Holiday Luncheon on December 8 at Soriano’s at Parkside in Bridgewater. The meeting was a great success with around 59 attendees and no snow in sight.

Wholesale used vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally adjusted basis) increased in December. It was the sixth increase in the past seven months, and it brought the December reading to 125.7 – its highest level since July 2011 and only 1.6 percent below the peak reached in May of that year. The Index is up 1.5 percent from last December.

Congress passed a $305 billion transportation bill in early December, The FAST Act (Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act), which incorporates many stand-alone bills. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will deliver recall notices directly to affected car owners via email, will be updating the NHTSA website, and also will publish annual reviews of every manufacturer’s recalls over the past five years, broken out by part and by repair-completion rates.

Pep Boys agreed to be acquired by Carl Icahn for more than $1 billion after Bridgestone Corp. backed down from a bidding war with the billionaire investor. In late-December the auto-parts chain said that it terminated an earlier merger pact with the tire manufacturers and signed a definitive agreement to be bought by Icahn Enterprises for $18.50 a share. Icahn’s investment firm also will pay Bridgestone a $39.5 million termination fee on behalf of Pep Boys.

Automakers on January set a new U.S. sales record for 2015 even as December sales fell short of expectations, and most forecasters said the new year will be even better. For full year 2015, U.S. sales hit a record of 17.47 million vehicles, breaking the mark of 17.41 million vehicles in 2000, according to Autodata Corp, as low gasoline prices, easy credit, and moderate economic growth boosted the industry.

General Motors is investing $500 million in Lyft, part of a wider-ranging strategic partnership that will include a rental program for drivers of the car-sharing service and the creation of an on-demand autonomous car network. Along with a seat on the board of the San Francisco car-sharing network, GM is closely allying itself to the shift away from its main business until now — the sale of cars — to a more service-oriented one.

The County of Ventura, CA is reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its fleet of vehicles, and lowering costs, by participating in NAFA's Sustainable Fleet Accreditation Program. The fleet earned its accreditation in early-January and has been recognized on the NAFA website for its achievement.

The U.S. Justice Department on January 4 filed a civil suit against Volkswagen AG for allegedly violating the Clean Air Act by installing illegal devices to impair emission control systems in 600,000 vehicles. The allegations in the lawsuit carry penalties that could cost Volkswagen billions of dollars, a senior Justice Department official said.

Americans bought just 102,600 such vehicles in 2015, a 17 percent decline from the previous year, according to researcher Autodata. Nissan Motor Co. sold 43 percent fewer of its all-electric Leaf and General Motors Co. reported an 18 percent drop for its Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in model that’s driven by an electric motor and has a gasoline engine to recharge its batteries.
