NAFA recently announced it is seeking input on changes being considered to the Association’s membership qualifications and board structure that would enable a wider audience to join and become leaders of the Association. Chief among the changes being discussed by NAFA is a broadening of the definition of who qualifies to be a member of the Association, which is already the largest fleet-related association in the world.

In late-March NAFA announced that the National Property Management Association (NPMA) and the Canadian Association of Fleet Supervisors (CAFS) joined the ever-growing list of organizations partnering with the Association. NAFA’s agreement with NPMA calls for the associations to collaborate on educational endeavors and mutually support each others' individual certification programs. NAFA’s agreement with CAFS gives Canadian fleet managers access to NAFA’s CAFM ® program while providing NAFA exclusive endorsement of the program.

Last month’s federal budget outlined the fiscal and economic blueprint the new government intends to follow early in its mandate. It was heavy with platform commitments that the Liberals ran and won on. Having made so many promises, it was impossible to keep them all in the government’s first fiscal plan. That said, there has been a marked shift towards rhetoric and policies aimed at "greening" the economy, meeting climate change targets, and transitioning to a low carbon economy.

Wholesale used vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally adjusted basis) declined in March for the third consecutive month. That brought the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index to a reading of 122.5 for March, a decline of 1.6 percent from a year ago. Although wholesale prices have fallen every month in 2016, this should not be looked at with alarm. After all, it has long been anticipated that pricing would ease this year. Additionally, evolving industry patterns and practices may be muting what used to be a very strong spring bounce in pricing.

Fuel prices were the only category in which costs were forecast to decline this year, but the decline is significant. Even with recent bumps upward, the forecast in the 2016 Your Driving Costs study is for a $414, or 24.62 percent, year-over-year decline, to around 8.45 cents per mile, or $1,267.50 for the full year.

Toyota has launched a new partnership with software giant Microsoft meant to expand the use of technology both for the development and production of new vehicles, as well as to expand the range of features and services that can be delivered to customers while driving. The German automaker is now recalling it's 2015-16 e-Golf hatchback because of issues with the battery software. This issue affects 5,561 cars produced from May 21, 2015 through March 1, 2016.

Cummins has received a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a Class 6 commercial plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The only major criteria that the new vehicle must meet is that it must reduce fuel consumption of traditional Class 6 trucks by 50 percent.
