Element Financial Corp. said it will split into two publicly traded firms in a bid to unlock shareholder value. The former will be led by Bradley Nullmeyer, Element’s President, and the latter will be led by Steve Hudson, the Chief Executive Officer, according to a statement on February 23.

U.S. auto safety regulators are examining whether an additional 70 million to 90 million Takata Corp airbag inflators should be recalled because they may endanger drivers, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. That would nearly quadruple the 29 million inflators recalled so far and linked to nine deaths in the United States. In all, as many as 120 million Takata inflators in U.S. vehicles contain the same volatile chemical - ammonium nitrate - used in inflators that automakers have recalled, according to company documents verified by two former Takata managers.

In addition to having to recall millions of cars for malfunctioning airbags, Honda has also recently received the dubious honor of being the most stolen car in the U.S. According to the FBI, car thefts rose one percent in the first half of 2015. While this seems like a minuscule percentage, the agency also says that this was the only property crime to rise during that period. Before that, car theft statistics had been on a steady decline.

The typical American motorist will spend $300 this year repairing vehicle damage caused by potholes, according to a new report by the AAA, and as the American highway infrastructure continues to worsen, the problem could continue to get worse. The problem will become even more apparent in the weeks ahead, as roadways begin to crumble as snow and ice begin to thaw.

Toyota has announced that it is recalling more than 3 million SUV's, more than 1 million of which were sold in the U.S., because the safety belts could potentially fail in a crash. This comes as the auto industry is trying to recover from a record total of 51.2 million recalls last year, per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In late-February, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released the Fiscal Year (FY) 2017 Congressional Budget Request. In brief, DOE’s FY 2017 budget decreases investment in the Clean Cities deployment program by 32 percent below last year’s enacted level and 53 percent below last year’s budget request.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reportedly asked Volkswagen to manufacture electric cars in the U.S., as part of ongoing negotiations concerning the German automaker's diesel emissions scandal. As German newspaper Welt am Sonntag reports, the electric vehicles would be built at VW's plant in Chattanooga, TN.
