"The NAFA Board of Trustees recently decided to take the next in this process, which is to ask the Members to vote on changing the Association’s bylaws. On August 22, all NAFA Full Members and Associate Members will receive a ballot on which they can vote to approve or disapprove of the proposed changes. The Board, naturally, recommends the changes be approved, as do I."

The much-hyped Three Amigo Summit – the recent meeting in Ottawa between Prime Minister Trudeau and his Mexican and American counterparts – was equal parts theater and concrete policy making in action. The leaders of the three North American countries discussed many issues, but in policy terms, the most concrete announcement was a plan to achieve 50 percent clean power generation across the continent by 2025.

Industry News

The settlement was filed with a U.S. District Court in San Francisco. It calls for Volkswagen to pay more than $10 billion to either buy back or repair about 475,000 2-liter diesel vehicles that were sold between 2009 and 2015 and were built with devices to trick emissions testers. The company also will compensate owners who purchased 2-liter diesels before September 2015 with payments of $5,100 to $10,000, depending on the age of their cars.

Owners of four Mitsubishi models involved in a mileage cheating scandal will receive nearly $1,000 apiece in compensation, a move expected to cost the embattled automaker around $600 million. The automaker revealed in April that it used illegal testing procedures to inflate the fuel economy numbers of the four microcar models – two of which were sold under Nissan nameplates.

In an unusually urgent warning, both the U.S. government and Honda are telling owners of certain older Honda cars and SUVs to stop driving them and immediately have them repaired. That’s because their defective airbags, from Japanese auto supplier Takata, are making them dangerous to drive. Takata is already the subject of the largest recall in history. The affected cars this round cover about 313,000 vehicles from model years 2001 to 2003.

The vehicle model that reportedly crushed "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin on June 18 — killing him in a freak accident outside his Los Angeles home — was recalled just months ago after a problem with its park function caused injuries and crashes. Fiat Chrysler voluntarily recalled some of its 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees due to a dangerous design error in its electronic shifter.

A fatal accident in which the driver of a Tesla Motors Inc. Model S car operating in Autopilot mode was killed in a collision with a truck has prompted an investigation by federal highway safety regulators, the U.S. government and Tesla disclosed on June 30. The investigation of the first known fatality to involve a Model S operating on Autopilot comes as Tesla and other automakers are gearing up to offer systems that allow vehicles to pilot themselves under certain conditions across a wide range of vehicles over the next several years.

The U.S. robotics expert tapped to head Toyota’s Silicon Valley research company says the $1 billion investment by the giant Japanese automaker will start showing results within five years. Gill Pratt told reporters that the Toyota Research Institute is also looking ahead into the distant future when there will be cars that anyone, including children and the elderly, can ride in on their own, as well as robots that help out in homes.

A key part of FPL's plan includes repurposing used "second-life" batteries from more than 200 BMW electric vehicles to test "peak shaving" for better grid management during periods of high demand via a storage system, to be installed in a densely populated residential area in southwestern Miami.

Telecom giant Verizon announced in late-June that it is acquiring Telogis, a California-based company that develops cloud-based solutions for the mobile workforce, and specifically telematics, compliance, and navigation software used by Ford, Volvo, GM, and other car companies, as well as Apple and AT&T.

While a number of countries, including the U.S., are taking steps to increase the use of battery and other alternative powertrain technologies, Germany is laying out plans for an aggressive shift away from gasoline and diesel, said Deputy Economy Minister Rainer Baake, speaking at climate forum sponsored by the Tagesspiegel newspaper in Berlin.

Maine Governor Paul R. LePage has issued an executive order for state officials to begin studying the potential health effects of emissions produced by gasoline engines that burn fuel containing ethanol. The order also implements a purchasing preference for state agencies for gasoline that contains only trace amounts of the corn-based additive. LePage says that because "federal mandates" have increased ethanol production in the U.S., that it has affected the air quality in the Pine Tree State.

The first hybrid to hit American roads was the Honda Insight back in 1999. The car sold a meager 17 units in that inaugural year. Now, almost 20 years later, Americans purchased their four millionth hybrid vehicle. It is impossible to say which model hybrid was the one to reach this benchmark, but given cheap gas prices and a sharp uptick in sales of pickups and SUVs, this milestone proves that the hybrid can keep up in the current marketplace.

Saab Automotive's current owners say that they won't revive the Saab nameplate and will instead sell cars under the National Electric Vehicle Sweden (Nevs) brand. The last remaining vestige of Saab, its website, now redirects to Nevs, where the announcement was recently made.

For the most part, the majority of electric plug-in vehicles today are sedans and compact cars. Tesla's Model X is one of the few battery-electric SUV's, but that could be about to change. Jeep CEO Michael Manley said that the brand has battery-based cars that are currently "under active development," and according to the company, they might not be very far from launching such vehicles.
