Car Hackers a Top Concern for Lawmakers and Auto Industry, Department of Energy Pledges $4.5B for EV Charging Stations, Senators Call for Higher 2018 RFS Biodiesel Targets, and EPA Releases Draft Midterm Fuel Economy Report
Achieving consensus in Canada is famously difficult, and on climate policy in particular harmony will be impossible to find. Alberta, for its part, is charging ahead with its carbon tax while its neighbour to the east, Saskatchewan, warns of dark times ahead if such a plan is implemented nationally. Ontario, meanwhile, is attempting to implement a vastly complex and costly set of climate policies that could have an impact on every aspect of life in the province if fully enacted.

It appears the auto industry will get a reprieve from being forced to meet a strict fuel economy standard of 54.5 mpg by the year 2025. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and California Air Resources Board (CARB) recently released their draft Technical Assessment Report, which indicated that the 54.5 mpg number is now off the table, due to falling gas prices and growing consumer demand for pickups and SUVs.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is under investigation for fraud by the United States Justice Department. Federal prosecutors are looking into whether the automaker violated U.S. securities laws. A civil lawsuit filed in January, in which a Chicago- area dealership alleges FCA inflated U.S. car sales by paying dealers to report selling more vehicles than they actually had, indicates that investigators are looking into FCA's sales reporting practices.

The air bag supplier behind the largest recall ever, Takata Corp. is now one of the most infamous names in the auto industry. But just when it didn't seem the news could get any worse, a recent audit by Honda Motor Co. found that the air bag supplier removed results to reduce variability in performance tests of the parts. Until recently, Honda had been Takata's biggest customer.
We've all experienced it. You're sitting in traffic after a long day at work, someone cuts you off, and you immediately feel compelled to express your displeasure with the offending driver in the most effective way possible. This condition is known simply as "road rage," and while there is no known cure, a new study shows that drivers across the United States are getting more and more aggressive when it comes to losing their cool behind the wheel.
General Motors has issued a recall for just under 290,000 Chevrolet Impalas because the air bags might fail to inflate in the event of a crash. The issue lies in the passenger presence sensory system, which may not always recognize that a passenger is present in the front seat. This issue is unrelated to the infamous Takata recall that has plagued GM, as well as other manufacturers.

A 2-kilometer stretch of the E16 freeway near Gävle, Sweden, nicknamed the e-way might be the world's most advanced stretch of pavement. Electric current running through power lines above the freeway delivers energy to specially-modified Scania trucks. When the big rigs are connected to the power lines, their internal combustion engines shut off and, as a result, they have no tailpipe emissions whatsoever. Given that much of Sweden's power is derived from windmills and solar panels, the environmental impact is minimal.
In mid-June, Tesla CEO and Founder Elon Musk released a blog post identifying what he sees as Tesla's future, and it is not necessarily about owning a segment of the automotive industry. Tesla contribute to making the energy economy sustainable. The plan would see consumers handle their own energy via a solar/battery combination and provide electric vehicles for every market segment.
Recently, many automaker have been worried about being able to meet the federal government’s CAFE fuel economy standards. It appeared that they might get a slight reprieve with the news that regulators had reduced their target mileage from 54.5 mpg by 2025. However, days before that news broke, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also announced it would be doubling the fines assessed to automakers that fall short of fuel economy regulations.
Volkswagen recently reached a settlement with U.S. regulators in their infamous Dieselgate lawsuit. The German automaker's wallet is now $15.3 billion lighter and they are now beginning to invest in more environmentally friendly ventures, but after everything that has gone on leading up to this settlement, many of these "clean" diesels might still fall short of meeting U.S. clean air laws once they are recalled and repaired.
Ford Motor Company has found another way to make their cars greener, lighter, and overall more sustainable -- they just added a shot of Jose Cuervo. The car manufacturer has teamed with the spirits maker to create car parts from the fibers from the agave plants used in the Mexican tequila. Ford has found that the leftovers from these plants can be used to create a light, cost-effective bioplastic that can be used in many of the models in their fleet.
Audi will aim to have electric cars account for a quarter of their sales by the year 2025. While this is due in part to fallout from the recent emissions scandal that centered around Audi's parent company, Volkswagen, it is also a shot across the bow of Tesla. The U.S.-based electric car maker has struggled to meet production quotas lately, so VW and Audi see this as a chance to gain an edge in the luxury electric car market.
