Although there was a near-universal expectation that wholesale prices would suffer in 2016 due to growing wholesale supplies, current auction values are not abnormal relative to several long-term historic relationships. Most notably, with respect to new vehicle pricing (when looked at using both the new vehicle CPI and average transaction prices), wholesale pricing is not exceptionally high.

Over the past several months, the government of Ontario has continuously signaled its desire to make electric vehicles a priority for consumers. This has been made obvious through a variety of announcements, most recently through the announcement of Ontario’s Climate Change Strategy unveiled in early-June.

Verizon Communications announced August 1 that it will be purchasing vehicle tracking firm Fleetmatics Group Plc for $2.4 billion in cash. The move is meant to bolster Verizon's expansion into the connected vehicle and fleet management markets. This acquisition comes about a month after Verizon announced it would purchase location-based software producer Telogis for $400 million.

While Mercedes-Benz is known for producing luxury sedans and their AMG line of performance vehicles, many may not know that they are also the largest producer of commercial vehicles in the world. Mercedes and parent company Daimler put out some 850,000 commercial and fleet vehicles in 2015 alone, but they aren’t slowing down. The German automaker recently broke ground on its first U.S. van assembly plant it plans to build in Charleston, South Carolina. The plant will build the full-size Sprinter van and, possibly, the mid-size Metris van.

The 1996 Honda Accord and 1998 Honda Civic topped the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s 2015 Hot Wheels list of most stolen vehicles. Not surprisingly, the top five on the list is rounded out by other very popular selling vehicles: 2006 Ford full-size pickup, 2004 Chevrolet full-size pickup, and the 2014 Toyota Camry.

Economists in early-August were mixed on if U.S. auto sales have hit their peak, and just when a downturn is expected to drive sales lower. Cited concerns include flattening new housing starts, increasing student and auto loans, and record-high leasing of vehicles, which in a few years will flood the market and push car resale values downward.

Nissan North America is beefing up it's pickup truck lineup with the release of the first-ever single cab Titan. Both the base model Titan and the Titan XD will be available as a single cab for the 2017 model year. Aimed at the commercial fleet market, this latest variant of Nissan's full-size pickup is scheduled to hit showrooms this fall. This is a big step for Nissan, as the commercial pickup truck segment in the U.S. has been dominated by GM, Ford, and Chrysler for some time.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently announced his intent to purchase SolarCity Corp. for $2.6 billion in shares. This is the latest step in Musk's "Master Plan Part Deux," along with a surprise suggestion: a heavy duty Tesla electric vehicle semi.

According to a recent poll, three in five Americans feel like they're being taken advantage of when it comes to buying a car, and the dissatisfaction is greater the younger you are. Tellingly, 34 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds would rather wait in line at the DMV than go to a dealership; 24 percent say they'd even rather have a root canal.

Manufacturers are beginning to develop more and more vehicles that run sustainable fuels, including many of today’s popular fleet vehicles. Mercedes-Benz is the latest to follow this trend, announcing that they will begin to develop vans and trucks with battery-electric technology and autonomous features. The German luxury auto maker plans on rolling out such vehicles by the end of the decade.

The Chevy Volt has finally regained the U.S. lead over the Nissan Leaf. Through June, Chevrolet sold 9,808 of the plug-ins, compared to 5,793 Nissan Leafs. Overall, U.S. sales of plug models came to 64,747 for the first half of 2016, up from 54,347 during the same period in 2015.

In June 2014, U.S. dealerships in California began taking deliveries of Hyundai Tuscans that were available as hydrogen fuel-cell-powered vehicles.These were the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicles available from the manufacturer. Just a few weeks ago, Hyundai Motor Co. announced that they are set to unveil their second-generation hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle in early 2018.

After filing bankruptcy, Chinese auto part producer Wangxiang Group purchased the assets of plug-in hybrid pioneer Fiskar in 2014. Wangxiang renamed the company Karma Automotive and recently announced their sales strategy for their first-ever production car, the Revero. Karma also announced plans to develop and build a $375 million vehicle factory in China capable of producing 50,000 vehicles annually.
