NAFA eagerly announces it is seeking four (4) candidates for its 2017 Board of Directors. As a result of the recent changes to NAFA’s bylaws, now every fleet manager and supplier whose membership is in good standing is eligible to be considered for the NAFA Board of Directors. On October 3, NAFA and The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) announced the signing of an agreement in principle designed to increase energy efficiency in vehicle fleets of NAFA members and cable system operators. Once a formal agreement is finalized, the two organizations will promote professional development and standardization of operational practices in the fleet management field, and will work together to develop new training and benchmarking material that can help to identify and remedy inefficient practices.

NHTSA Issues Automated Vehicle Policy, Congress Closing in on Deal to Avert Government Shutdown, New Study Shows Americans Intrigued, Weary of Autonomous Vehicles, and NAFA Weighs in with NHTSA on OBD-II Ports

Parliament resumed in Ottawa on September 19 with Members of Parliament coming back to the House of Commons to continue their work on legislation and for opposition political parties to keep the Liberal Government accountable. Surprisingly, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not come back to Ottawa to see his Parliament resume.

Volkswagen Truck & Bus is looking to "fundamentally change" the transport industry with the launch of its RIO cloud-based operating system. There is currently no information available specifying if the company plans to roll out to the United States, but RIO is slated to go online in 2017, according to the company’s plans announced in the lead up to the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover, Germany.

FTR Transport Intelligence and CK Commercial Vehicle Research conducted a fleet survey to collect information regarding heavy duty vehicle usage, maintenance practices, and aftermarket parts purchasing activity. The survey data is combined with FTR industry data and analysis to provide a comprehensive view of the heavy duty maintenance practices and markets.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recently announced a recall of more than 1.9 million vehicles because a mechanical glitch could prevent airbags from deploying in the event of a crash. Of that total, 1.4 million of them were sold in the United States, 225,000 in Canada, and 285,000 in Mexico. The vehicles involved in the recall include a mix of 2010 to 2014 Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Lancia models. The issue is already linked to five injuries and three fatalities.

After weeks of uncertainty and threats of striking, General Motors and Unifor, the union representing Canada's auto workers, have agreed to a new contract that includes $420 million in investments from the manufacturer. The deal also promises new product commitments, raises for employees, and full-time status for temporary workers. It also dpecifically requires product commitments for GM's Oshawa Assembly Plant in Ontario, which was on the verge of shutting down after 2019.

NAFA Member Mark Kostos, passed away on Sunday, March 20. He was Fleet Shop Supervisor for Charleston County (S.C.) for 21 years and vice president of the Southeast Governmental Fleet Management Association (SGFMA). Mark held an ASE Master Technician Certification.

Federal officials have taken the first step of asserting oversight over the software that operates autonomous vehicles by officially publishing a set of guidelines governing these self-driving cars and trucks. This is the government's first attempt to regulate this technology.

In the near future, car owners will be in the minority, predicts Lyft Co-founder John Zimmer. "By 2025, owning a car will go the way of the DVD," says Zimmer, who is also President of the San Francisco-based ride-hailing service. In major U.S. cities, private car ownership "will all but end," he writes.

Automotive assembly plants, like most other factories, are typically not very environmentally friendly. They cover millions of square feet and produce hundreds pf thousands of cars annually, which can leave quite a footprint. That's why General Motors is beginning to take steps to improve the overall sustainability of their manufacturing practices. The automaker says that all of their plants will be run on renewable energy by 2050, a goal that they are already beginning to take small steps towards achieving.

Just a few months after finally announcing a solution to their highly-publicized "Dieselgate" incident, it appears that this nitrogen-oxide-fueled nightmare might have made Volkswagen reconsider continuing sales of TDI diesel models in the United States entirely. The German automaker has been prohibited from selling such vehicles in the U.S. since late last year. Instead, the manufacturer says they will focus on expanding their product portfolio to stay competitive in the U.S.

Daimler AG is planning to give a little spark to the U.S. truck market, announcing at the IAA Commercial Truck Show in Hannover, Germany that it plans to introduce two fully electric commercial vehicles to the United States as soon as next year. The Mitsubishi Fuso eCanter will see a "soft launch" in a few major cities, while a more realistic version of Mercedes-Benz's all-electric Vision Van concept will likely be launched in the U.S. as well.
