On February 13, 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Donald Trump shook hands for the first time during a trip that had been planned months in advance. Many political commentators had been waiting for this moment because of the clear ideological differences between the two leaders, which raised the question of if they’d ever be able to create a positive and beneficial relationship. It had the potential to contrast the Prime Minister’s relationship with President Barack Obama, which has continuously been seen in a positive light.

In a flurry of activity in early-February, Congress nullified an Obama administration environmental measure intended to curb the venting of gas wells on federal lands. This instigated the process of rolling back other regulations, including one enacted to limit the damage that coal mines cause to streams — an item on the "Roadmap to Repeal," a concise list of Obama administration environmental regulations that business groups were pressing President Trump and Congress to quickly reverse after Inauguration Day.

According to the vehicle history reporting company Carfax, more than 63 million recalled vehicles now are in use across the country, an alarming 34 percent increase from 2016. The annual research also suggests this issue affects nearly one in three vehicles in Texas, the highest rate in the nation.

Hyundai Motor America is recalling the 2017 Hyundai Elantra to fix a potentially serious problem with the car's brake booster. The recall affects 33,803 Elantra vehicles registered in the United States. It may take longer for drivers to bring their vehicles to a stop, which could increase the risk of a collision. As of January 26, however, Hyundai had received no reports of accidents or injuries linked to the problem.

According to recent reports, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) will be awarding up to $10 million in grants as part of a new school bus electrification and alternative fuels program. Funding is available for the purchase of new advanced technology zero-emission fuel cell and battery electric school buses and associated vehicle charging equipment.

Barely a week after announcing it would partner with General Motors to develop to develop hydrogen fuel cell technology, Honda Motor Company announced it has entered into a joint venture with Hitachi Automotive Systems. This new agreement will see both companies partner to develop, create, and sell motors for electric vehicles so that both can better compete in the highly specialized, and increasingly competitive, "green" car segment.
