In the long list of important people who figure prominently in NAFA's 60 year history, few loom as large as Willard H. DaSilva, who served as the Association's first legal counsel, as well as a founder of the NAFA Foundation. He passed away on May 5, 2017 at Friedwald Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing in New City, New York surrounded by his family.

Literally an icon in fleet and NAFA alike, George Argueta has announced his well-earned retirement from the regional sales position at Corporate Claims Management. Argueta has experienced nearly every aspect of the fleet industry, as a manager, as a service provider, and as a constant, guiding support for others. Wholesale used vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally adjusted basis) improved 0.5 percent month-over-month in April. This brought the Manheim Used Vehicle Value reading to 124.7, which represented a 1.6 percent increase from a year ago. On a year-over-year basis in April, the mid-sized car category saw the largest decline, while only pickups saw gains greater than the overall market.

The recent Ontario budget included a significant investment towards autonomous vehicles (AV), the latest in a long line of government acknowledgements of the fast-approaching reality of AVs on Canada’s roads. If all goes according to plan, the network will seek to capitalize on the economic potential of AVs and help the province’s transportation systems and infrastructure adapt to AV technology.

The long-promised but dormant issue of auto insurance reform appears to be reviving among some leading Republican Michigan lawmakers. House Speaker Tom Leonard said in late April that high auto insurance rates are "one of the biggest issues facing our state" and pledged to cut premiums as much as possible.

Toyota is recalling about 250,000 small pickups mainly in North America because the rear wheels have the potential to lock up, causing drivers to lose control. The recall covers certain Tacoma trucks from the 2016 and 2017 model years.

Major automakers on May 2 posted declines in U.S. new vehicle sales for April in a fresh sign the long boom cycle that lifted the American auto industry to record sales last year is losing steam, sending carmaker stocks down. It was with great sadness that NAFA learned of the passing of Earl H. Miller in late-April. Miller was previously President of Corporate Collision Inc., but entered into retirement in October of 2016, moving to Palm Desert, CA. The news of his death came as a shock to those who knew him.

UPS is putting two hydrogen-powered delivery vans on the road, the latest sign that fuel-cell technology is moving out of the lab and onto the road.
