NHTSA said that it is granting "a short deferral of GM’s obligation" to recall the vehicles with Takata air bags after the Detroit automaker filed a petition with the agency in September. U.S. buyout firm KKR & Co. is buying Nissan Motor-backed auto parts maker Calsonic Kansei Corp. for up to $4.5 billion, seizing on a rare chance to do a multi-billion dollar purchase in Japan. KKR beat out rival private equity firms Bain Capital and MBK Partners, which had bid to buy Nissan's stake. Japan's second-biggest automaker opened the auction to sell the stake in June.

Traffic deaths have been on the rise this year, and as auto makers tout safety advances like autonomous braking and lane-keep assist, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that more people are buckling their seat belts than ever before. NHTSA reported on November 21 that 90 percent of all drivers and front-seat passengers were buckled, according to a survey from June.
