It’s hard to believe I&E 2018 is over. After a full year of planning, several weeks of high-level stress leading up to the event, then five days of flat-out sprinting for 18 hours a day, it came and went so fast! I’ve already been back in the office for nearly a full week. Here are some of my reflections on I&E - from an “operational” perspective - that make me smile.

The Annual Business Meeting at I&E is traditionally the session where NAFA leaders let members and attendees know about all the great things NAFA did the previous year, and offer a glimpse of the Association's future direction. On the morning of April 24 at the Anaheim Convention Center, NAFA President Bryan Flansburg, CAFM, touched upon the full value of the Association, from its position as a leader in the industry to its very personal connection to each and every member.

During the Chapter Appreciation Luncheon which took place on April 24, an individual who is well-known to NAFA membership took the stage to let I&E attendees know of great things on the horizon. NAFA Foundation President Claude Masters, CAFM, described the changes the organization took on recently, as well as the strategic goals it has set for itself in the near future as a strong supporter of the fleet industry.

On April 25, prior to CAFM graduation recognition events, Ryan Meppelink of Ferris State University was awarded the NAFA Foundation's 2018 Willard DaSilva Student Scholarship. He was selected by the NAFA Foundation and the award was presented by NAFA Foundation President Claude Masters, CAFM.

Excitement abounded on the evening of April 24 as the winners of the 2018 FLEXY Awards ascended the stage and claimed their awards. The FLEXYs are open to all fleet professionals, regardless of whether or not they were members of NAFA Fleet Management Association. Features in this edition: President Trump indicated April 11 that his Administration may allow E-15 gasoline to be sold year-round. The Environmental Protection Agency currently bans the use of E-15 during the summer months because they say it contributes to smog on hot days.
The President announced the nomination of Heidi King to lead the National Highway Traffic Safety and Health Administration. NHTSA has been without a permanent Administrator since January 2017. King has served as the Acting Administrator since last September.
The Road to Zero Coalition, an alliance including NAFA and over 600 other government, advocacy, and automotive-industry organizations, released a comprehensive report seeking to eliminate roadway fatalities in the U.S. by 2050. The report is released amid increasing concerns about the uptick in roadway-related deaths following years of decline.
Legislation meant to facilitate the development of self-driving cars is currently stalled in the U.S. Senate. The AV START Act (S. 1885) would regulate autonomous cars and trucks lighter than 10,000 pounds and is intended to advance the development and deployment of highly automated vehicles (HAVs).

In anticipation of the election in Ontario being held on June 7, 2018, the Ontario New Democratic Party, under leader Andrea Horwath, released its election platform on April 16, 2018, which proposes major spending in multiple different areas.
