Pacific Northwest Member and NAFA Regular Member Kent William Fretwell lost his short battle with cancer on October 27. He was 58 years old and at his home with his family by his side at the time of his passing. Colleagues and family members provided their respects through recollections of Fretwell, his life, and his work.

NAFA's St. Louis Gateway Chapter meeting in October featured Phillip E. Russo, CAE, NAFA Chief Executive Officer; Bill Schankel, CAE, NAFA Chief of Staff and Operations; and Tina Mercardo, CMP, NAFA's Director of Meetings and Events. The meeting was held at the Marriott at St. Louis Airport and featured an overview of new initiatives for the Association into 2019 and beyond.

On October 26, 2018, NAFA's Sunshine State Chapter dug into the topic of electric vehicle Implementation. The gathering took place at Disney's EPCOT Center. One auto manufacturer has promised 20 new electric vehicle types by 2023. Another promises 40 hybrids and electrics by 2022. Is it a surprise to see a ramp-up in options with $166 million up for grabs in government fleet EV infrastructure and diesel replacement funding available under the Florida Volkswagen settlement?

In the news: Finalized biofuel blending quotas for 2019 are expected to come in the next few days.
The EPA launched the Cleaner Trucks Initiative, a program with the stated goal of decreasing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions produced from heavy-duty trucking.
The EPA announced that auto dealerships, collision shops, and salvage yards will soon be exempted from the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act's hazardous waste management regulations on the disposal of defective Takata airbag inflators.
Competing legislative proposals to either terminate the electric vehicle credit or lift the 200,000-vehicle cap are now competing for final decision-making.
Informal talks have continued between the U.S. and European Union about potential tariffs on foreign car imports.

In the news: On November 21, 2018, the Minister of Finance Bill Morneau tabled the Fall Economic Statement in the House of Commons, proposing the highly anticipated government response to the U.S. corporate tax cuts. While the update does not include new initiatives for the automotive industry and small businesses, the government reiterated its commitment to signing the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA), reduce small business taxes, and continue to promote trade diversification.
