NAFA's I&E Curriculum Committee is currently working to identify key topics for the 2017 Institute and Expo. NAFA recently announced it is seeking input on changes being considered to the Association’s membership qualifications and board structure that would enable a wider audience to join and become leaders of the Association. Chief among the changes being discussed by NAFA is a broadening of the definition of who qualifies to be a member of the Association, which is already the largest fleet-related association in the world.

Remarketing Strategy
Wholesale used vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally adjusted basis) inched up in April after starting the year with three consecutive monthly declines. That brought the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index to a reading of 122.8 for April. Given that wholesale prices were easing at this time last year, the year-over-year decline in the Index was reduced to 1.1 percent in April.

The first budget of the current government contained nearly $3 billion dollars in investments aimed at mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and tackling the threat of a warming climate. Of note, the single largest budget item - $2 billion for a Low Carbon Economy Fund – won’t start to flow until fiscal 2017-2018, giving Ottawa another year to design how the money will be spent.

Nissan plans to recall 3.5 million vehicles sold around the world to fix sensors that could cause a car’s airbags to fail to deploy in the event of a crash. The recall covers a number of Nissan and Infiniti cars, trucks and crossover vehicles, including the Altima sedan, Leaf battery car, and NV200 commercial van. The recall is the fourth to attempt to address the problem with so-called "smart" airbag sensors.

Daimler AG has brought in an outside firm to review its internal records for any sign of cheating on emission tests for diesel engines sold in the U.S. and the European Union. The auditing firm of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu was hired to help with an internal investigation into its diesel-engine emissions technology requested by the U.S. Department of Justice, the luxury car maker said. The Delotte Touche review is specifically designed to see if Daimler used any devices to manipulate emissions tests.

In an effort to not only lessen the learning curve, but also speed to the front of the pack when it comes to autonomous vehicle technology, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Google have announced a partnership that will greatly benefit both parties. Google will get a partner in the auto industry and FCA will have access to technology Google has been developing since 2014.

GM is recalling close to 4.8 million of it's pickups and SUVs due to a potential steering malfunction created by some bad welding. This recall includes the 2016-17 Chevy Silverado, the 2016 Chevy Suburban and Tahoe, the 2016 GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL, and the 2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.

In the wake of a fuel economy scandal that saw Mitsubishi admit to fudging the numbers on most all of their Japanese models, Nissan announced that it has purchased a 34 percent controlling stake in the embattled automaker. Nissan invested 237 billion yen ($2.2 billion) to complete the purchase and is now Mitsubishi's largest shareholder.

The honoree for 2016's Distinguished Service Award, Claude Masters, CAFM ®, recently retired from Florida Power and Light, but his legacy is evident in NAFA's convictions and continued efforts in fleet sustainability. According to a new study, roof racks may cost drivers as much as 25 percent more in gas usage. Researchers in the first-of-its-kind study discovered that, in 2015, these popular add-ons were accounting for nearly one percent of all light-duty vehicle gasoline consumption. On the surface, it may not sound like much, but it equates to more than 100 million gallons of gas annually.

A big reason why Best Buy's Geek Squad agents gained fame was because of their instantly recognizable fleet of black and white Volkswagen Beetles. But last month, the electronics superstore announced that those famous cars would be going green instead, as they will begin to roll out a fleet of 1,000 Toyota Prius C hybrids to replace their VW counterparts.

Mark Fields, CEO of Ford Motor Company, said his company plans to take "a leadership position" when it comes to electric vehicles (EVs) and develop a long-range model that can get around 200 miles per charge. The 2017 Focus Electric is projected to go around 100 miles on a charge, but a growing list of manufacturers are already passing that mark, including General Motors, Volkswagen, Audi, and, of course, Tesla.

The company, whose large fleet of conventional power plants has made it a leading independent power producer, will sell a majority stake in its electric vehicle charging business, EVgo. And its home solar division will sell the future customer agreements it originates to two partners, Sunrun and Spruce, once the systems are up and running.
