NAFA Association News
NAFA recently announced it is seeking input on changes being considered to the Association’s membership qualifications and board structure that would enable a wider audience to join and become leaders of the Association. Chief among the changes being discussed by NAFA is a broadening of the definition of who qualifies to be a member of the Association, which is already the largest fleet-related association in the world.

Remarketing Strategy
Consecutive increases in the Manheim Index in April and May do not suggest a reversal in the expected downward trend in pricing as a result of higher wholesale supplies. They do suggest, however, that dealers have continued to achieve efficiency gains that are allowing them to bid up auction prices even as gross margins narrow. That’s encouraging to commercial consignors who have been expecting, and preparing for, greater weakness in wholesale pricing.

Legislative News
Technological advances and greater tests of vehicle safety have led to a greater frequency of vehicle recalls in recent years. Most recently Takata, a Japanese automotive parts company, declared that 14 million air bag inflators were defective. This has caused over 12 million vehicles from eight different automakers in the United States to be recalled. This has spilled into Canada, with Fiat Chrysler recently announcing that they would be recalling 400,000 vehicles for the same problem.

Biofuels advocates, farmers, and oil industry supporters gathered on June 9 to weigh in on U.S. regulators' latest plan for biofuels use requirements. Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) heard comments from over 100 participants on their plan for how much ethanol and other renewable fuel needs to be blended into motor gasoline and diesel next year, ahead of a November 30 deadline to finalize the proposal.

The now infamous Takata airbag recall has grown exponentially since their inflators were found to be defective last October, with another 4.4 million cars added to the list just a few weeks ago. The scope of this recall is enough to make anyone scratch their head and wonder what’s going on with the now maligned airbag supplier. In addition, a few manufacturers admitted to selling vehicles with recalled Takata inflators, affecting about 2.1 million vehicles.

A nationwide recall of more than 7,000 2014 and 2015 Ford Police Interceptor SUVs has prompted Southern California law enforcement agencies to take precautions, inspecting same-year models in their fleets for safety and making repairs if necessary. At least one accident and one injury have occurred related to the problem that sparked the recall, according to Ford Motor Co.’s recall notice.

Congress passed the Raechel and Jacqueline Houck Safe Rental Car Act late last year, but the bill only just became federal law this month. This new legislation does just what the name implies. It is meant to ensure that all rental vehicles are as safe as every other car on the road, by prohibiting recalled vehicles from making it into rental fleets. The bill is named for two sisters killed in a highway crash in a rented Chrysler PT Cruiser in 2004. The car was subject to a recall.

Sustainability
Canadian Portfolio Manager Martin Grosskopf is betting heavily on alternative fuel vehicles overtaking traditional cars as a pillar of his no-fossil-fuels allocation strategy. Grosskopf said he was scoffed at when he took a stake in Tesla Motors Inc. four years ago, with analysts questioning potential demand. But the electric vehicle manufacturer's prolific growth since has helped quiet the critics.

Garbage trucks can weigh a few dozen tons, and given the fact that they stop and start every few yards, they can be incredibly inefficient and burn quite a bit of diesel in the process. Mack's new LR Series low-cab-forward chassis, which was unveiled at WasteExpo in Las Vegas, boasts claims that the truck will reduce fuel consumption by about 70 percent.
