Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG, has stated recently that services such as fleet management present an excellent growth opportunity for the German automaker. Earlier this month, Zetsche put this thought process into action by purchasing Athlon Car Leasing International from Rabobank for 1.1 billion Euros ($1.2 billion). This acquisition, which was expected to be completed in the final quarter of 2016, will more than triple the size of Daimler's fleet management business.

The federal government released an alarming statistic earlier this month. Last year, the number of people killed in traffic accidents rose increased by 7.7 percent. That’s a not-so-grand total of 35, 200 fatalities on U.S. roads last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That number is also up from 2014, which saw 32, 675 fatalities. Last year’s total equates roughly 1.12 deaths per 100 miles driven.

"White hat" hackers—the folks hacking for good purposes, not nefarious ones—will be paid between $150 and $1,500 for each legitimate security flaw through a bug bounty program managed by Bug Crowd, a crowd-sourced cybersecurity company. Bug Crowd, which is backed by several venture capital and private equity firms, raised $15 million in a Series B funding round in April.

As more and more auto manufacturers gear up for production of autonomous cars, they are beginning to partner with technology companies to develop more connected vehicles. The latest agreement is between Volkswagen and LG Electronics, who will work "over the next few years" to develop a platform that will enable a car to communicate with a driver's mobile device. The two companies will develop technology that will allow drivers to control devices in their cars, as well as inside their homes.

After stating in January that ride-sharing services were crimping the growth of rental car companies, Hertz Global Holdings Inc. seems to have reversed their position. The car rental giant has reached an agreement with Uber and Lyft, the two most prominent ride-hailing services in the U.S., to supply their drivers with vehicles after Hertz circulates them out of their rental fleets.

Honda Motor Co. has developed a new electric motor for hybrid vehicles that tackles two top challenges in manufacturing the crucial drivetrain component: The high cost and uncertain supply of the rare-earth metals used in their powerful magnets. The key is a new motor not using any heavy rare-earth metals, such as dysprosium or terbium. The breakthrough frees Honda from being at the mercy of supply bottlenecks of the sparsely distributed metals and increasing prices as demand for them soars.

Tesla turned the traditional dealership model upside down a few years ago. Rather than utilizing the usual dealership lot method, the company chose to open retail stores in malls across the country which would then prompt customers to go home later to order their new Tesla online. This is an innovative way of thinking, but due to large numbers of orders, Tesla was unable to keep up with production in the second quarter of this year and failed to deliver over 20 percent of the cars that were ordered.

As car makers begin to offer more and more electric and hybrid vehicles, there is another form of technology that manufacturers are utilizing to make their cars and trucks more efficient. Rather than adding batteries or plugs, they are throwing on turbochargers. While these parts are often used as a way to enhance a car's performance, turbos can also be helpful in boosting power in smaller engines while maintaining good fuel economy.

Volkswagen's wallet has been getting progressively lighter lately, thanks to fines and penalties from Dieselgate (VW owes $86 million to the state of California alone) and a recent $14.7 billion settlement with the U.S. government from the same scandal. But the embattled automaker has gotten a slight reprieve, as the German government has decided not to fine VW. They will simply be required to fix all faulty diesel engines.
