Industry News
Tuesday, November 8 is the long-awaited presidential elections for the United States. Despite the passionate and at-times colorful conversation on immigration, national security, and jobs, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate Donald Trump have spent relatively little time discussing energy policy. Finding details on the candidates’ energy policy is a challenge in itself. At Clinton’s campaign page, energy is part of a wider discussion on climate change, and at Trump’s, it is part of a multibulleted economic proposal.

The number of deaths in the U.S. tied directly to defective Takata airbag inflators has risen to 11 after a California woman’s driver-side airbag ruptured in her 2001 Honda Civic. At least 16 deaths are now linked to the defect, which triggered the largest recall in automotive history: Nearly 100 million airbag inflators worldwide by more than a dozen automakers.

Each year, Consumer Reports releases their annual Brand Report Card. This ranking of the top automotive brands is meant to help drivers decide which automakers are most reliable and which have some work to do. This year's list ranked Audi, Subaru, and Lexus in the top three spots, while Fiat came in last. The Italian brand's sister nameplates at Fiat Chrysler didn't fair much better, with all of them finishing outside the top 20.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is set to issue two separate recalls on over 300,000 Dodge, Jeep, and Ram models because of the potential for some fairly serious safety malfunctions. In the first recall affects several variants of FCA's Ram pickup and Chassis Cab, as well as several newer Dodge Charger Pursuit models because the alternators can wear prematurely and potentially lead to engine fires. The second recall affects over 180,000 Jeep Wranglers because faulty wiring may lead to the air bags not deploying in a crash.

Motor oil leaked from individual vehicles constitutes a significant chunk of storm water runoff, the fallen precipitation that runs off of roads and parking lots and inevitably finds its way into local water bodies. These pollutants include not only leaked motor oil—which may contain toxic substances like lead, benzene, zinc, or magnesium—but also fertilizers, insecticides, plastic debris, cigarette butts, paints, solvents, sediments, and other hazardous waste.
