Wholesale used vehicle prices (on a mix-, mileage-, and seasonally adjusted basis) increased 2.6 percent month-over-month in May. This brought the Manheim Used Vehicle Value reading to 127.9, which was a record high and represented a 2.8 percent increase from a year ago.

The U.S. government is investigating complaints that air bag control computers in some Jeep Liberty SUVs can fail, preventing the air bag system from operating properly in a crash. The probe covers about 105,000 of the vehicles from the 2012 model year.

The states of Iowa, Maryland, Nevada, and Tennessee will each receive $15,000 in grant funding from the Governors Highway Safety Association and The National Road Safety Foundation to launch campaigns this year to help prevent drowsy driving, the two organizations announced.

While Ford Motor Company's North American plants normally shut down for two weeks in July, the automaker has announced that it will be keeping its SUV manufacturing plant in Kentucky open for an extra week this summer. This will allow them to produce several thousand more vehicles to help meet the demand for the Ford Escape and Lincoln MKC.

Beginning June 6, Waze Carpool app users in California will be able to hitch rides (sharing costs) with drivers/commuters headed in the same direction as them — potentially allowing commuting costs to be notably cut for some people. This should also cut the number of vehicles on the road.

Carmera, a New York City-based startup, is proposing technology which constantly refreshes GPS mapping data. This would be crucial for any company working on self-driving technology. The company’s unique solution to the 3D mapping problem is partnering with delivery fleets to collect its data. In exchange for attaching sensors on top of their fleet vehicles, the company provides its partners with video monitoring data and data analytics around safety and efficiency.

Toyota has revealed that it had sold off all of its remaining shares in Tesla Inc., the Silicon Valley-based battery-electric automaker, ending what had once been seen as a promising tie-up. The move – completed by the end of 2016 – comes as Toyota ramps up its own, tenuous electric vehicle program, shifting some of its resources away from its long-standing hydrogen fuel-cell program.
