This desire to change, to see things from different perspectives, was never more evident than after last year’s annual conference. Despite the overwhelming success of the event (total attendance up seven percent, more than 900 fleet managers, sold out expo hall, higher than anticipated revenue, lower than anticipated expenses), my staff and I knew we couldn’t simply hit the proverbial “rewind” button and do it all again in 2019.

Legislative News
In the news: The federal government reopened after a three-week funding agreement was passed on January 25.
The Administration is reportedly looking to extend its authority to unilaterally increase tariffs as a response to other countries’ tariff and non-tariff policies through recently introduced legislation. A draft bill, the Rebuild America Act of 2019, is being circulated to increase the federal motor fuels tax by five cents a year starting in 2020. The Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety released its 2019 Roadmap of State Highway Safety Laws, which identifies state laws critically needed to reduce motor vehicle crashes. EPA to hold informational webinars on 2019 DERA grants.

In the news: In preparation for the election and potentially affecting infrastructure, Prime Minister Trudeau made significant changes to his cabinet on January 14, 2019, including the creation of a new portfolio which will look at rural economic development. Under the administration of Bernadette Jordan, a rookie Member of Parliament from rural Nova Scotia, this role is meant to create a strategy for rural Canada for economic growth. The effort will determine ways to more efficiently get infrastructure investments out to rural and remote communities.
