The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 was enacted to protect people over 40 from age-based discrimination in the workplace. At that time, it was common for random age limits to be placed on jobs. The ADEA was designed to make it easier for people over 40 to find and keep employment and to avoid on-the-job discrimination related to things such as salary and promotions.
