Industry Update

Construction costs escalated in February, driven by price increases for a wide range of building materials including steel and aluminum, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of Labor Department data released recently. Association officials warned that newly imposed tariffs on those metals will create steeper increases that will squeeze budgets for infrastructure, school districts and commercial projects.

FedEx plans to invest more than $1 billion into an expansion project at its hub in Memphis, Tennessee. Announced at a news conference March 14, 2018, the project will include a new sort facility, state-of-the-art sort systems, and improved work areas for employees. Construction is expected to start in 2019 and finish in 2025.

Construction is one of many industries that rely on foreign seasonal workers to help them through peak seasons, but that may not be an option for some this year. Due to an unprecedented number of H-2B visa applications received, the Department of Labor has employed a lottery system for the second half of fiscal year 2018. This will likely leave many contractors empty handed.
