Congratulations to the 2018 - 2019 NAWIC Board of Directors The 2018 - 2019 NAWIC Board of Directors is below. New Directors are in bold. The term for the 2018 - 2019 Board of Directors will begin on August 18, 2018. President: Dove Sifers-Putnam, CBT Know of Any Apprentice/Training Programs for Women in Construction? TD Industries is looking for examples of apprentice/training programs for women in the construction industry. TD Industries recently partnered with United Way of Greater Houston's THRIVE program to provide apprenticeship for 10 women in a 12-week course. All 10 were true Day-1 hires learning how to work with sheet metal on a Houston job site. TD Industries is hoping this pilot program will grow to other regions of the company. As part of TD Industries campaign, they recognize the need for more women in the industry, and are looking for other programs around the nation. If you know of any programs that can be used as a good example for TD Industries, contact Rae Buchanan, raeb@nawic.org with your information.

NAWIC Career Center The NAWIC Career Center offers construction companies, recruiters and hiring managers a unique resource that allows them to communicate their job openings to women in various fields of the construction industry. Fifty-four percent of highway contractors reported that motor vehicles had crashed into their construction work zones during the past year, according to the results of a new highway work zone study conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America. In response, association officials have launched a new mobile advertising campaign urging drivers who routinely pass through certain work zones to slow down and be alert.

Effective Friday, June 1, Canada, Mexico and the European Union will be subject to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum. Industry experts anticipate these higher costs to negatively impact construction and could stall or halt projects.

Construction employment increased in 256 out of 358 metro areas between April 2017 and April 2018, declined in 63 and was unchanged in 39, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released recently by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said that the data showed a continuation of strong labor demand amid shortages of qualified workers.
