For the first time ever, NAWIC is taking the party off-site to Portland Public House for a night of networking, drinks, appetizers, and more! You won't want to miss this special event, where we will premier our special collaboration with Deschutes Brewery, Dovetail Workwear, and Pink Boots Society- our very own, limited-edition NAWIC Brew!
NAWIC is excited to announce its new book donation program in collaboration with MiTek and The House That She Built! Chapters are now able to order copies of The House That She Built to give away at educational programs for students free of charge. The House that She Built was inspired by the team of real women who came together from around the country to build a one-of-a-kind home. It aims to educate young readers about all the people and skills that go into building a home.
Chapters must meet certain criteria and pay for shipping. Please contact media@nawic.org with questions.
Host Angela Highland sits down with NAWIC National President Lauline Mitchell, ESP. In addition to being the 2022-2023 NAWIC President, Lauline is the Director of PreConstruction at BBI Construction in Oakland, California. Lauline discusses her vision for women in construction, leadership and the power of NAWIC on women's lives and careers. This is a great conversation that you do not want to miss.
Education / Training
Dear NAWIC Members:
I am NAWIC at-large member and currently undertaking a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction at Kansas State University. In order to complete my dissertation I am required to research a topic area. The topic I have chosen to look at is the influence of adult role models on female construction management professionals in their adolescent years. The purpose of this study is to identify the role model relationships female construction management professionals developed in their adolescent years. Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) became a federal holiday in the United States on June 17, 2021, under Joe Biden presidential administration. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation or freedom of enslaved African Americans in the United States, as declared on that day in 1865 when the federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops arrived a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.
NAWIC Benefits Spotlight
I don’t always feel like I fit the generational descriptions and have always pushed back on being part of Gen X. I never felt the angst portrayed in Reality Bites nor did I feel the conflict in Office Space (both movies are worth revisiting). However, needs, wants, desires, perspectives, and approaches continue to change and change again as new generations enter the workforce. Consider that by 2030 all of the Baby Boomers will be past the age of 65, eligible for Social Security and Medicare, and will have more ability to exit the workforce.
How do we change our approaches to meet the needs of the following generations? I can assure you that Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z are as different from each other as they are from the Boomers and Veteran generations. For many in our industry, the need to show up on a job site, perform physical tasks, and shower at the end of the day did not change during the pandemic and likely will remain. The acceptance and implementation of different styles and approaches in interpersonal relationships certainly has changed.
Still spending hours each week processing paper time cards?
The labor shortage in the construction industry isn’t just in the trades. People who work in the office are also living the day-to-day reality of having to do more with less resources. Check out this savings calculator!
That’s why technology is so important—and so empowering.
