Moral injury refers to the lasting psychological, spiritual and social impact of one’s own or others’ actions that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations. Somewhat surprisingly, moral injury has received very limited attention in the social work literature. Yet the impact of moral injury may play a significant role in increasing the vulnerability of a wide range of the profession’s clients as well as its practitioners.

The U.S. Justice Department has submitted a "statement of interest" in a lawsuit seeking to end the solitary confinement of juveniles in a New York jail.

For more than a decade, juvenile justice reformers have used developments in adolescent brain science and psychology to make their case for a system that emphasizes rehabilitation and second chances for young offenders. Those same developments now are helping fuel an interest in how the criminal justice system treats young adults. This population has plenty in common with their younger counterparts because they, too, are still maturing, researchers and policymakers say.

A North Carolina state law is designed to help children who would normally age out of the foster care system. "Foster 18 to 21" allows those aged 18 to 21 to continue to receive services through the system. According to the N.C Health and Human Services website, young adults who choose the program are more likely to get their diploma and degree.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is recommending a pilot program to provide care to around 500 foster care children across the state with the highest needs. The $8 million program would mean those with multiple hospitalizations – including residential treatment centers – over a 12-month period would qualify for the High Needs Conservatorship Pilot Project.
