The Department of Labor's proposed changes to the overtime regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act are closer to an official release, as they are now with the Office of Management and Budget for final review. After the review period — which could be a few weeks or a couple of months — the final rule will be published in the Federal Register and will likely take effect 60 days after publication.
SHRM submitted comments to the DOL last year and provided opportunities for SHRM members to discuss how these changes will impact their organizations before the DOL, the Small Business Administration and multiple congressional committees. Additionally, SHRM has recently supported the introduction of bills designed to stop these changes from going into effect until Congress does more research on the adverse effects of the change on nonprofit organizations and small businesses. In the meantime, we wanted to share this list, provided by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), of eight important things to know so that you can prepare for what lies ahead.

Even if you’re qualified for an interview, your resume could prevent you from getting to that step, if a ‘screener’ finds something to disqualify you. Screeners typically spend less than one minute looking over your resume so it’s important to show them your best attributes right away and not waste their time. Don’t bury your most essential or biggest accomplishment – put it right at the top of your resume. For example, if you’re a recent college graduate, your degree will likely be your biggest qualification. If you’ve worked in a certain industry or in a certain role for a few years, summarize that as your biggest qualification.
Other things that screeners look for include: a resume that’s easy to read; your location (and whether it is near the job location); your education; the dates in your work history; whether your resume contains language that matches the keywords in the job description (especially the listed job requirements); and proper spacing and formatting.

WEBINAR: What Retirement Plan Sponsors Need to Know About Fee Transparency & Fiduciary Liability
Presented by Larry Albert of Capital Management Partners
Cost: Members - $FREE, Non-Members - $49
In 2012, the DOL issued fee disclosure rules for qualified plans under sections 408(b)2 and 404(a)5 of the ERISA code. These rules provided a new level of transparency to the retirement plan industry. Many plan sponsors do not realize the significant fiduciary responsibility they have in this area not only to make sure that their plan’s expenses are disclosed to plan participants, but also to examine whether the fees paid to service providers and other expenses of the plan are "reasonable." This program will discuss how plan sponsors can satisfy these fiduciary obligations by benchmarking their retirement plan against similar plans in their industry.
