On April 1, 2022, NEHES held its annual Spring Seminar in Danvers, MA, hosted by the Massachusetts Healthcare Facility Professional Society (MHFPS), and by all accounts, the seminar was a huge success! Overall attendance increased by 35%, with active membership attendance up 27% over 2021. These numbers are on par with the 2019 Spring Seminar, prior to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you to all who made this event happen and to all who attended.

There are a couple educational opportunities on the horizon through NEHES and the American Society of Healthcare Engineers (ASHE). The ASHE Annual Conference is in Boston this summer July 17-20 and is your opportunity to attend the national conference with little travel expense. ASHE puts on an amazing conference, and we’d like to see a great showing of NEHES members. Soon after on September 18-20, NEHES is hosting the annual Fall Conference in Portland, ME, and it promises to be to an outstanding event. I urge you to get involved and plan for three days of education and activities with your peers. More details will be coming soon.

As we get further into the year, it is a good time to reflect on our past and plan for the future. NEHES is always looking for ways to improve our content and increase the value we bring to our active, student, honorary, and supporting members. We welcome ideas for improvements, content, educational/social. Who knows? You may find your way onto a committee. As always, thank you to everyone and keep doing what you do!

Peer Review

Attention all NEHES members! Do you have a healthcare engineering project that should be shared with our community? Maybe you know of a New England healthcare facility that recently modernized a large asset like a boiler or an air handler? Perhaps there’s a New England healthcare facility that is pursuing a large-scale fit out, retrofit or new build on their campus?

If you have a project that you believe makes a New England hospital unique and worth sharing, NEHES wants to give it a shout out! The NEHES monthly newsletter would like to share one “Peer Project” every month to allow a hospital the opportunity to share their success and what challenges they faced along the way. Do you have a project that’s ready for the spotlight? If so, act now! Reach out to the newsletter co-chairs today to get the ball rolling!

Membership

Attention all NEHES members! Do you know or work with a NEHES member that deserves some recognition? Maybe a colleague who went above and beyond their daily roles and deserves a shout out. Or maybe you know a new member that you would like to introduce to the NEHES community. NEHES is comprised of some amazing, talented people, and our members want to know more about them! New members are continuously joining our society, and it is important we get to know who they are.

The NEHES newsletter would like to feature one member per month in the newsletter. If you would like to nominate a NEHES member for the Member Spotlight column, please reach out to the newsletter co-chairs Michael Kilbride or Katrina Reade.

When was the Last Time you Checked HVAC Coils for Mold & Bacteria
Conservation Solutions Corp®
Mechanical cleaning of coils every 6 months is not effective so Healthcare facilities need solutions to control bacteria, mold and viruses including Covid-19 in HVAC systems 24/7. Steril-Aire UVC Systems are a CDC approved technology to improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), reduce Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) and associated liability costs. Steril-Aire UVC Systems are backed by a 2 ½ year peer reviewed ASHRAE study of 6 NE hospitals. Not All UVC Systems are the same.

Sustainability

Attention all NEHES members! Do you know of a New England healthcare facility that’s doing something a little different? Maybe you were recently introduced to a hospital’s sustainability practices and think other hospitals could learn from it? Or maybe there’s a New England healthcare facility that’s organizing its roofing program a little differently and it could help other facilities to read about and mimic in their own way?

If you know of a program, practice or operational habit that you believe makes a New England hospital unique and worth sharing, NEHES wants to give it a shout out! The NEHES monthly newsletter would like to share one “Golden Practice” every month to allow a hospital the opportunity to share how they built the practice, how they implemented it, and what challenges they faced along the way. Do you have a golden practice that’s ready for the spotlight? If so, act now! Reach out to the newsletter co-chairs today to get the ball rolling!
