Certifications:
I am studying for my CHC and will be testing in 2024 and prepping for CHFM when I become eligible.

How has NEHES/ASHE contributed to your career?
The organizations have helped by providing environments to make connections with other healthcare professionals and have provided opportunities to further my education so that I can better serve my organization and community.

What is your background in the healthcare facilities field?
My first introduction to healthcare, back in early the 2000's, was in the construction trades--glazing specifically. I installed glass in new construction hospitals and expansions onto existing facilities in Tampa, FL and surrounding areas. My first time being employed directly by a healthcare facility was here in Maine and where I currently am now with Southern Maine HealthCare. In 2021, I started as a maintenance technician and was promoted to manager the following year.

Do you have a personal tidbit to share?
When I'm not working, I am with my wife and four children doing "dad stuff." If I have a moment to myself, it usually consists of building & soldering mechanical keyboards (for computers), PC gaming, 3d printing, and programming.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy working to preserve and update my aging facility. I've learned some history from folks who have grown up in the area, and back in the 1930's the Sanford /Goodall hospital was called "the diamond on the hill." I have tried to embrace that ideal and have been working to get the facility back to that status. It is and will be a long road, but I have confidence we can get there.

From Retro to Renewable: A Partnership for Carbon Reduction & More
Preferred Utilities Manufacturing Corporation®
"In a remarkable partnership, ACS and Preferred Utilities revitalized a 1950s NYC school boiler room. They retrofitted vintage equipment while modernizing controls to enable efficient use of renewable B20 biodiesel for carbon reduction. This transformation enhanced efficiency and significantly reduced the boiler room's carbon footprint, exemplifying sustainable solutions for greener boiler rooms in New York City."

ASHE Update

In this article, NEHES' ASHE Advocacy Representative Ed Lydon shares interpretive guidance to help you strengthen your environment of care and life safety preparedness.

This graphic (pictured right) represents a scenario that may be encountered in healthcare facilities. Specifically, the connection of medical gas cylinders to anesthesia machines and ventilators. A surveyor may encounter these configurations with past due product expiration dates affixed to or written on these cylinders.

Providing expiration dates for medical gas on cylinders is not an FDA requirement.  However, if they are present their placement is an indication that manufacturers have conducted a study to support the need for the label. When a Life Safety Code Surveyor (LSCS) sees a label the position to take is that a stability study was conducted for the product and the expiration date is valid.

Surveyors who observe medical gas cylinders in use with past due expiration dates will consider the deficiency and score at EC 02.05.09 EP 14. As a reminder, CMS COP K 926 Gas Equipment – Qualifications and Training of Personnel is enforceable.
In this article, NEHES' ASHE Advocacy Representative Ed Lydon shares interpretive guidance to help you strengthen your environment of care and life safety preparedness in relation to elevator sprinklers

In healthcare there are specific requirements for automatic sprinkler systems based upon occupancy classification (ex. Healthcare, Business, Ambulatory), height of a building (ex. Highrise), building components (ex. Elevators, shafts), and requirements based upon Authorities having Jurisdiction (AHJ’s). Life Safety Code Surveyors (LSCS) occasionally encounter facilities where the elevator shaft is not sprinklered based upon direction of the local approving authority. How can a surveyor quickly analyze these specifics to determine if sprinkler protection is required?
