The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) anticipates that Conditions of Participation for the new Rural Emergency Hospitals (REHs) designation will be finalized this autumn. CMS says this new provider type, effective January 1, 2023, will promote equity in health care for those living in rural communities by facilitating access to needed services. The REH designation was established by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 to address the growing concern over closures of rural hospitals. The final rules will include several life safety and other physical environment requirements. For more information, please visit the CMS website by following the link below. |
Facility managers are experts at mitigating life and patient safety issues, but many struggle to control infection risks in the hospital environment during construction or while performing maintenance and repairs. What if infection risk for facilities was treated the same way it is with patients, where infection is defined as the "invasion and growth of germs in the building system"? The Environmental Rounding Tool released by ASHE in August helps facility managers apply infection control tactics of building system maintenance by identifying opportunities for infection risk during rounding.
