A highly anticipated police study on the effects of shift work has been released by the Police Foundation. This report presents results of the first comprehensive randomized experiment in law enforcement designed to test the impacts of different shift lengths on performance, health, safety, quality of life, sleep, fatigue, alertness, off-duty employment, and overtime among police officers. The results, suffice it to say, were quite interesting and will undoubtedly have ramifications for fire and EMS. Click here to download a copy of the study report.
