NYSAFC 2nd Vice President Don Corkery and FASNY 1st Vice President Robert McConville at the Suffolk County program.
NYSAFC held another SAFER-funded Recruitment and Marketing Assistance Project Training workshop on October 13, 2012, at the Smithtown Fire Department in Smithtown, N.Y. This training was conducted in cooperation with the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services.
Speakers discussed ways for fire departments to more effectively interact with local media and develop campaigns to help market themselves to their communities. The relationship between positive marketing and volunteer recruitment was also covered. A portion of the training focused on the Suffolk Educational Program for Retention in the Volunteer Emergency Services (SERVES), which is another SAFER-funded initiative. Workshop participants from fire departments in Suffolk County received a supply of pamphlets and other resources, such as lawn signs and manuals, to assist in recruitment efforts.
The training presentations and related resource materials from this and all previous Recruitment and Marketing Assistance Training sessions will be posted on the NYSAFC website in late 2012. Any fire department wishing to host a Recruitment and Marketing Assistance Training workshop in the future should click here to e-mail Sue Syzdek.
