2013-2014 NYSAFC Officers Installed During 107th Annual Conference

Chief John M. Tighe of the City of Corning Fire Department was installed as president of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs during the 107th Annual Conference Installation Ceremony on June 15, 2013, at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, N.Y. He will serve a one-year term leading the organization.
Tighe started his career as a volunteer firefighter in Horseheads, N.Y. In 1974, he was appointed as a career firefighter with the City of Corning Fire Department, where he rose through the ranks to the position of lieutenant. In 2000, Tighe was appointed chief of the City of Norwich Fire Department, where he served until his retirement in July 2006. In May of 2010, he returned to active duty as chief of the City of Corning Fire Department. Tighe has been a member of NYSAFC since 1975 and served on the Paid Chiefs, Conference, and Government Affairs Committees prior to joining the board of directors in 2005.
Also during the Installation Ceremony, Chief Donald J. Corkery of the Sayville Fire Department was sworn in as 1st vice president and Chief Daniel J. Schwertfeger of the Floyd Fire Department was sworn in as 2nd vice president. Both will serve one-year terms.
Chief James W. Harrington of the Gates Fire Department and Chief Lee Shurtleff of the Groton Fire Department joined the board of directors this year. Harrington will serve a three-year term as a paid director, while Shurtleff will serve a three-year term as a volunteer director.
Chief Harold A. Smith Jr. of the Nedrow Fire Department and Chief John P. Sroka of the Defreestville Fire Department were also sworn in to serve additional three-year terms as volunteer directors.
