The names of nine fallen firefighters were added to the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial Wall this year. The annual New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony was held on October 8, 2013, at the memorial site located on the Empire State Plaza in Albany, N.Y. Four of the honored firefighters were lost in 2012, while the others were lost in previous years.
Lieutenant Governor Robert J. Duffy, the Honorable Hugh T. Farley (representing the New York State Senate), the Honorable Steve Englebright (representing the New York State Assembly), Commissioner Jerome M. Hauer (New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services), State Fire Administrator Bryant D. Stevens, and Deputy State Fire Administrator William R. Davis Jr. were among those who participated in the ceremony to honor New York’s fallen firefighters, and to offer sympathy to the families and comrades they have left behind.
The Empire State honors the memory and valor of its fallen firefighters each year at the memorial during Fire Prevention Week. As of the 2013 ceremony, the names of 2,381 firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty dating back to 1811 have been inscribed on the wall. The memorial was dedicated in 1998.
