NYSAFC hosted a Fire Officer Leadership Development Workshop in Beacon, N.Y. on September 6, 2014. The daylong class featured three instructors who addressed skills that are vital for the modern fire officer.
The first workshop segment reviewed the basic principles of NYSAFC’s "7 Habits of Highly Effective Firefighters" program, which was modeled after the renowned Franklin Covey leadership skills development program. Participants received copies of the "7 Habits" training materials, including a Franklin Covey planner and task matrix. The second workshop segment highlighted effective recruitment strategies, including the fire officer’s role in developing and implementing successful recruitment and retention activities. The third segment focused on essential techniques to market a fire department as a community asset and ways to effectively deal with the media in both emergency and non-emergency situations. All participants had an opportunity to practice their media relations skills in front of a television camera. Throughout the day, participants enjoyed lively group discussions and had the opportunity to share their experiences with others.
