NYSAFC Water Rescue Training is Coming to Long Island in May

NYSAFC is pleased to announce Water Rescue Training 2015, a new program coming to Lawrence, NY on May 16-17, 2015, hosted by the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department! Students can attend seminars on Saturday, May 16, participate in water rescue or EMS hands-on training on Sunday, May 17, or register for both the seminars and hands-on training!
Registration fees are:
- Seminars Only (Saturday): NYSAFC Member: $20 • Non-Member: $30
- Seminars and Water Rescue or EMS Hands-On Training (Saturday and Sunday): NYSAFC Member: $40 • Non-Member: $50
Seminar lectures will be held on May 16 at the Lawrence Middle School in Lawrence, NY from 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Seating is unlimited. Seminars include:
What Can You Do For Us, What Can We Do For You
With Sr. Chief Andrew Merchel & Petty Officer John Lowell, United States Coast Guard, Station Jones Beach
This comprehensive seminar will review resources the United States Coast Guard has available to local water rescue agencies. It will also cover what resources the USCG is seeking and what role agencies can play in day-to-day USCG operations. No prior training required.
Drowning, Diving Emergencies, and Hypothermia
With Lt. Gary Benedict, EMT-P, FDNY
This seminar will feature a classroom lecture and practical training that will cover planning, medical considerations, rescue equipment, self-rescue, and shore-based rescue techniques for various types of emergencies. The use of simulation dummies will aid students in reviewing real-life scenarios, presenting them with actual diagnostics. An EMS background is preferred.
Small Boats for Rescue
With Det. Dave Norman, NYPD Emergency Service Unit
This seminar will provide an overview of small crafts that are typically used by fire, police, and rescue units. It will include a classroom lecture and interactive training covering the practicality of certain boats, their design, and problems associated with each type. Towing, launching, equipment, and maintenance for daily operation will also be reviewed. No prior training is required – for all members involved in the rescue process.
Hands-on training will be held at the Cedarhurst Yacht Club/Reynolds Channel on May 17 from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Participants must check-in at a staging area located at Lawrence Middle School and will be transported to the training site. Lunch will be provided. Two hands-on training programs will be conducted and space is limited! Programs include:
Water Rescue Hands-On Training
Training will review boat launching and recovery, navigational skills, boat operations, recovery of victims, patient care and working with EMS. Includes an open water practical. This is not a small boat handling class and boat teams should be familiar with their vessels and have prior boat handling skills. Teams must bring vessels to participate. Training is limited to 50 students.
EMS Hands-On Training
Training will review communication with rescue crews and enhance team leader skills as students direct care and make use of critical thinking while working toward a successful resuscitation. Students will perform a thorough initial assessment; perform secondary assessment to find additional injury or useful information including SAMPLE, OPQRST and details from witnesses; perform high quality CPR within AHA guidelines; perform successful defibrillation, pacing, cardioversion as appropriate for the scenario; perform successful intubation with ETCO2 use; obtain IV or IO access; review proper medication administration; perform a telemetry presentation; and participate in a post-scenario hotwash. Students must have at least CFR certification to participate. Training is limited to 20 students.
