NYSAFC is pleased to announce that Codes Training will be offered in conjunction with the 110th Annual Conference & FIRE 2016 Expo on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY. Training will take place from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in Cypress Rooms A & B.

This program was coordinated by NYSAFC’s Codes Committee. The registration fee is $75 (per person), which includes a full day of training plus light breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and three One Day Tickets for the FIRE 2016 expo (valid June 16-18). Codes Training includes:

8:00 – 10:00 a.m.

"Evaluating Vacant & Abandoned Buildings – IAAI/USFA Abandoned Building Project"
Instructor: Deputy Chief Timothy Cowan, City of Oneida Fire Department

Vacant or abandoned structures are unsightly, attract criminal activity, and are a threat to public safety. NFPA estimates that there are more than 12,000 fires in these properties every year, which result in over 6,000 firefighter injuries. NFPA statistics indicate that more firefighters are injured while operating at fires involving vacant or abandoned properties than in any other property classification. This program will prepare personnel to inspect vacant or abandoned properties and identify conditions that could lead to injury or death in the event of a fire. The data collected as part of the inspection can be used as part of a pre-plan for the structure and in a community’s decision-making process regarding the allocation of resources for the mitigation of hazardous properties. The evaluation form developed by the IAAI/USFA Abandoned Building Project will be used as the basis for this program and will be given to each participant. This form is designed to assist the evaluator in gathering information that can be used in the final evaluation of the hazard posed by a particular property. CEO In-Service Credit Hours: 2

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

"Code Officer & Fire Official Basic Plan Review"
Instructor: Past Chief John Williams, Skaneateles Fire Department

This program is designed for plan review with code office and fire officials. It will cover plans, fire flow, building design, fire access roads, and interaction with fire and codes officials at the beginning of the permit and plan process. CEO In-Service Credit Hours: 2

1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

"ECCCNYS for Residential Buildings: CEOs"
Instructor: Matt Evans, Newport Ventures, Schenectady, NY

This program will cover the 2015 Energy Code requirements for residential buildings, including applicable administrative provisions and documentation that a code official should receive prior to permitting and inspection. The program will provide an overview of prescriptive building envelope, mechanical system, and lighting provisions with a focus on the rationale behind the code and the benefits of assuring full compliance. The instructor will ensure that attendees are familiar with terminology in the code and will use photos and examples to illustrate what a code official or inspector should be looking for as he/she performs inspections at different stages of construction. Group participation will be encouraged, with many opportunities for questions and discussion. CEO In-Service Credit Hours: 4

On-site registration will be available, but pre-registration is advised.
